Silně aromatické listy a schopnost růst téměř kdekoli dělají z kakostu oddenkatého naprostou stálici přírodních i venkovských zahrad. Ve své domovině, kterou jsou především hory Balkánského poloostrova a jižních Alp, obývá skalnaté svahy i vlhčí lesní lemy. Z toho pramení jeho mimořádná odolnost a veliká stanovištní tolerance. Roste bujně a spokojeně na přímém slunci, v mírném polostínu i v úplném stínu. Tento druh vyniká především svým kompaktním trsovitým růstem o výšce kolem třiceti centimetrů. Rychle vytváří zapojené porosty, což znamená, že jeho husté listy pokryjí plochu natolik dokonale, že nedají nežádoucím plevelům žádnou šanci. Od května do června tyto sytě zelené polštáře rozkvetou množstvím zářivých, purpurově růžových až karmínových květů. Ty představují velmi cennou pastvu pro včely, čmeláky a motýly v období vrcholícího jara. Květy kakostů většinou nemají ve floristice využití, o to více barevné radosti nadělají přímo na zahradě. Obrovskou výhodou této dlouhověké trvalky je její absolutní nenáročnost a soběstačnost. Nevyžaduje oporu, zcela se jí vyhýbají nemoci i obvyklí zahradní škůdci a bez nejmenších potíží přečká i ty nejkrutější mrazivé zimy. Na podzim navíc předvede nádhernou barevnou proměnu, kdy část listů získá ohnivě červený nádech. Fantasticky se uplatní při lemování cestiček, na okrajích smíšených výsadeb nebo jako souvislý zelený koberec pod vzrostlými stromy.
