Perennial of the Season 2026

Sanguisorba officinalis

Burnet is a native meadow plant that naturally occurs in moist meadows and along stream banks. In the middle of summer, branched stems topped with tiny flower heads grow from a dense clump of ornamental pinnate leaves. The 'Pink Tanna' variety boasts a delicate shade of old rose, which brings a romantic and airy element to the flowerbeds. Its inflorescences gracefully sway in the wind, creating constant movement in the garden. This long-lived perennial is vital for the rare dusky large blue butterfly and attracts other pollinators as well. In garden architecture, it is excellently suited for naturally styled plantings, prairie beds, or as an accompaniment to ornamental grasses. The flowers are excellent for cutting, lasting 7 to 10 days in a vase and adding lightness to bouquets. You can also dry them for winter arrangements.

Perennial of the Season 2026

Sanguisorba officinalis

Sanguisorba officinalis Arnhem, commonly known as great burnet, is an elegant perennial that will decorate the garden in summer with a flood of tiny, dark burgundy inflorescences resembling small drumsticks. This original meadow plant loves moister habitats and the sun, where it thrives best, but it can also handle partial shade. The Arnhem cultivar is specific for its vigorous growth and height reaching up to two meters, creating a striking vertical element in perennial borders. Thanks to its hardiness and frost resistance down to -34 °C, it is also an ideal choice for growers in colder regions. Its airy habit perfectly complements more robust perennials or ornamental grasses, adding lightness and color contrast to them. The flowers on thin but sturdy stems are highly valued in floristry because they last 7 to 10 days in a vase and lend arrangements a modern, sweeping look. If you leave the faded inflorescences in the flowerbed, their silhouette will decorate the garden even during the autumn and winter months. The plant does not suffer from pests or diseases, making it a rewarding companion even for novice gardeners.

Sanguisorba

The 'Purple Tails' burnet is an impressive perennial native to East Asia, where it naturally inhabits moist meadows and the edges of light forests in Korea and Japan. Despite its respectable height, which can reach up to two meters, it gives an extremely airy and light impression in the flowerbeds. Its main advantage is the long, elegantly drooping cylindrical inflorescences that gently sway in the wind. In the garden, it is excellently applied in modern, naturally styled plantings, where it forms a perfect partnership with ornamental grasses or other taller perennials. The flowers are also highly valued in floristry, adding lightness, flair, and unusual texture to bouquets. They last fresh in a vase for seven to ten days. The 'Purple Tails' cultivar boasts a beautiful pink to lilac shade of flowers, and the plant is fully frost-resistant.

Perennial of the Season 2026

Sanguisorba officinalis

Great burnet 'Tanna' brings the unrepeatable lightness and elegance of wild meadows into the garden in a neat package. The native species is a typical plant of moist and peaty meadows, where its roots search for moisture deep in the ground. This garden variety was bred for a smaller size, so with its thirty to fifty centimeters, it will fit even into compositions where tall perennials would cast too much shade. The dark burgundy flower heads look as if they are floating in the space above the decorative leaves, creating a wonderful visual effect that you will appreciate especially when viewed up close. In the garden, it is used in nature-inspired plantings, in gravel beds with sufficient moisture, or as a path border. The plant is completely frost-hardy and ideal for novice growers due to its undemanding nature, provided you give it loamy to clay soil that holds moisture. The inflorescences are tiny, but in a vase, they can put on a great show, especially in combination with fine grasses or white-blooming perennials. It attracts a large number of beneficial insects and bees, so by planting this great burnet, you are inviting life into your garden as well.
