The original natural species comes from the Caucasus. The Philippe Vapelle cultivar is valuable for its evergreen and distinctive gray leaves. It combines excellently with drought-loving and gray-leaved perennials and grasses. It spreads via rhizomes and forms dense velvety carpets over time. The flowers are large, blue-violet with darker veining. It is suitable for rock gardens, troughs, and tolerates hot flowerbed edges.
