Strongly aromatic leaves and the ability to grow almost anywhere make big-root cranesbill an absolute staple of natural and cottage gardens. In its homeland, which is primarily the mountains of the Balkan Peninsula and the southern Alps, it inhabits rocky slopes as well as damper forest margins. This is the source of its extraordinary resilience and great habitat tolerance. It grows vigorously and happily in direct sun, light partial shade, and full shade. This species stands out mainly for its compact clumping growth with a height of around thirty centimeters. It quickly forms closed stands, which means its dense leaves cover the area so perfectly that they give unwanted weeds no chance. From May to June, these deep green cushions burst into bloom with a multitude of radiant, purplish-pink to carmine flowers. These provide very valuable forage for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies during the peak of spring. Cranesbill flowers generally have no use in floristry, but they bring all the more colorful joy right in the garden. A huge advantage of this long-lived perennial is its absolute lack of maintenance and self-sufficiency. It does not require support, avoids diseases and common garden pests completely, and survives even the harshest freezing winters without the slightest difficulty. Furthermore, in the fall it puts on a beautiful color transformation, when some of the leaves take on a fiery red hue. It looks fantastic bordering pathways, on the edges of mixed plantings, or as a continuous green carpet under mature trees.

Its roots reach the sunny prairies and grassy meadows of North America, which is why it thrives most in direct sun in our gardens too. It does best long-term in well-drained, loamy, and humous soil, where it is provided with regular watering. The 'Floristan Violett' variety will brighten any space with a striking dark purple color. If you are looking for an ideal plant for beginners, you have just found it. Bigroot cranesbill seedlings are extremely adaptable and will reliably grow in a sunny location, in partial shade, and in deep shade. Before planting, prepare a permeable and humous loamy soil that will ensure good development of the root system. Plant the seedlings at a spacing of 30 to 40 centimeters to place 7 to 9 plants per square meter. This space is important for optimal air circulation in the early stages of growth. Soon, however, the plants will merge into a dense cushion reaching up to 40 centimeters in height, which acts as a perfect natural barrier against weeds.
During the growing season, the cranesbill practically requires no attention from you. It has very low moisture demands, so water only during periods of extreme drought. This long-lived perennial needs no additional support and naturally repels insects thanks to its strongly aromatic leaves, which smell beautifully when rubbed. The plant is completely pest-free and does not suffer from any diseases. In May and June, it will also delight you with a multitude of purple flowers, which are guaranteed to attract bees and butterflies to the garden. After flowering, you can lightly trim the plant to maintain a compact shape.
With the arrival of winter, you do not need to worry about any complex preparations. The plant boasts frost resistance down to -34 °C, so it playfully survives even the harshest winters without any covering. In autumn, just watch the beautiful transformation as some of the green leaves turn fiery red. Do you want to enjoy this beauty on your terrace too? Growing it in a pot is a great choice. It differs from other calamints with felted leaves by its record flowering length, stiff and shiny leaves, and also a larger number of flowers that do not form seeds and are therefore maximally durable. Sometimes sold under the cultivar name 'Triumphator'.
