Cultivation
The 'September Charm' anemone is a true jewel of the autumn garden, bringing a flood of pink flowers at a time when most other perennials are slowly retiring for their winter sleep. Because you will receive an already grown seedling, you can plant it practically anytime during the growing season, although spring and early autumn are ideal for good rooting. Choosing a location is absolutely crucial for this plant – it thrives best in partial shade, ideally in dappled shade under the canopies of taller deciduous trees, which simulates its natural forest environment. It can also tolerate a sunnier spot, but only provided it has constantly moist soil. The soil should be loamy, humous, and rich in nutrients, with good drainage. Heavy clay soils that retain water can cause root rot in winter, while in overly sandy soils the plant will suffer from drought.
Watering plays a vital role in growing anemones, especially in the first year after planting and during hot summer days before buds set. The soil should never completely dry out, so we recommend mulching around the plant, which will help retain the necessary moisture at the roots and provide nutrients at the same time. As for fertilizing, it is enough to treat the plants to a dose of compost or organic fertilizer in the spring. 'September Charm' is a vigorous variety that reaches a height of 80–100 cm, and a great advantage is its excellent health – it does not suffer from diseases and pests avoid it, so you don't have to deal with any chemical sprays. In the garden, keep a planting spacing of roughly 45 cm (3–5 plants per m²) so the clumps have enough space to spread.
Care for the plant during the year is undemanding. However, it is important to know when to cut the plant. Leave the above-ground part on the flowerbed over the winter. Only early in the spring, before new leaves begin to sprout, cut the old stems close to the ground. The plant is fully frost-resistant (down to -23 °C), but in the first year after planting it is advisable to cover it with pine branches or a layer of leaves for the winter, especially in colder areas (zone 6a).
If you are considering growing it in containers, it is possible, but it requires increased care. Given the height of the plant and its demands for root space, choose a large and deep pot with good drainage. The substrate in a container dries out much faster than open ground, so you will have to water daily in the summer.
