When growing Stock, two things are most important.
First, even though it is summer Stock, Stock grows in lower temperatures (15 - 20 °C). It therefore blooms in spring and autumn. Growing Stock during the summer is not really possible.
Second, the term double flowering often appears with Stock; e.g., the Katz series is 50% double. In effect, this means that only 50% of the plants will be double-flowered. Seedlings can be selected, however, it is a relatively complex process and in the past, we didn't have much success with it on the farm. Therefore, we find it best to count on the fact that part of the Stock will bloom single and to cleverly incorporate those into bouquets.
We always start Stock indoors. Sow 1 seed per cell of the seed tray. Sow on the surface of the substrate and cover with a layer of vermiculite.
At a temperature of 20 - 22 °C, Stock germinates in 3 - 5 days. Attention, conversely, too high a temperature (over 25 °C) reduces germination in Stock.
Stock spends 4 - 5 weeks in the seed tray before it grows into a seedling that you can plant into the bed.
Before transplanting, we recommend hardening off the Stock seedlings. Move them outside (outside the window) even with the tray so they are exposed to outdoor conditions. During hardening off, the seedlings strengthen beautifully and will then better tolerate transplanting.
Attention, we do not pinch Stock! We have (so far) only single-stem varieties in our offer (Katz, Iron) and pinching would cause the Stock not to bloom. Stock is therefore grown as single-stemmed, i.e., 1 seed = 1 plant = 1 stem.
Because Stock is grown as single-stemmed, a more intensive spacing is used. Seedlings are planted 12 cm apart. At our place, we have beds 90 cm wide and so we plant a total of 7 rows per bed and in the row the seedlings are 12 cm apart.
With Stock, it is most important to remember that they need lower temperatures (ideally 15 - 20 °C). So if you grow Stock in a polytunnel, don't forget to ventilate regularly and try to keep the temperature below 20 °C.
Even though Stock does not react to day length, higher temperature and longer days can cause premature blooming in Stock. That is, by the way, why it is challenging to grow Stock in summer. It will bloom for you and be barely 15 cm tall.
After transplanting, water the bed thoroughly. Keep a regular watering schedule for Stock so they root properly and at the same time grow in height. Don't forget to fertilize regularly. Once the Stock starts to bloom, you can reduce watering.
If you are a professional and grow Stock for cutting, we recommend support, or netting, which the Stock will grow through. Without support, it can happen that the stems will be bent and twisted. For beautifully straight stems, netting is a necessity.
If you grow Stock for cutting, it is harvested including the roots. Simply pull the whole plant out of the bed.
We have a total of three series of Stock in our offer, which have proven themselves on the farm and we like growing them.
More robust stems, more delicate, but in the end higher quality, higher percentage of doubles compared to the Katz series.
Very early Stock, simple to grow, we recommend it to everyone starting with growing summer Stock.
Great cultivar, which compared to the Cheerful series offers a wider color palette. Very simple to grow, withstands temperature fluctuations, irregular irrigation. Recommended for beginners.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
