Jacob's Ladder is a native wild perennial grown in gardens as an ornamental plant since the 16th century. Its individual leaves are arranged remarkably regularly, hence its common name Jacob's Ladder. Harvest when one-third of the florets are open. It lasts 7 to 10 days in a vase. The cultivar Blue Pearl has sky-blue flowers, just like the basic species.

The foxglove beardtongue Mystica is a relatively robust and long-lived perennial with attractive bronze-purple foliage and white-purple flowers. Decorative spent inflorescences continue to adorn beds well into winter. However, the plant can also be cut back after flowering to encourage new growth. The main difference between the penstemon Mystica and Husker Red lies in the foliage. Mystica leaves should be more durable and visually attractive even after the first frosts.
