We recommend growing columbine as a biennial, i.e., sow in June/July/August of the first year and plant out in autumn; the next year in spring, the columbine will bloom for you, and you will harvest beautifully long stems. Otherwise, columbine is, of course, a perennial; it will bloom in the same location every year and self-seed at the same time. You just need to take into account that the plant will not have the same energy in subsequent years as in the first year.
So if you plan to grow columbine primarily for cutting, grow it as a biennial and sow again every year.
Columbine seeds generally have lower germination rates, so we recommend sowing 1 - 2 seeds per plug cell. Sow on the surface of the substrate and cover with a layer of vermiculite. Do not panic, columbine takes a long time to germinate! It can easily be 14 - 21 days before you see the first leaves.
Once they fill the plug cell (4 - 8 weeks), transplant the columbine into small pots (e.g., 7×7×8 cm, or 9×9×10 cm), let them root, and only then transplant to the final location.
Transplant outdoors towards the end of summer so the plant has time to create a root system before the first frosts arrive. Covering for winter is not necessary; columbine is fully frost-hardy.
Columbine needs lower temperatures to bloom, so we recommend planting it in partial shade. However, if you garden in places with cool spring temperatures and keep the plants watered, they can tolerate full sun.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
