When we grow sunflowers on our farm, the following applies:
(1) we always start expensive sunflower seed indoors
(2) cheap seed can be sown directly into beds, or even scattered around the garden
(3) we never grow sunflowers in the same place for multiple years in a row
(4) spacing affects flower size (more intense = small flowers, wider spacing = large flowers)
(5) sow sunflowers successively throughout the entire season
Those are the most important points for growing sunflowers, but in order...
In our offer, you will find sunflower seeds from the ProCut series. ProCut is the Porsche among sunflowers — single-stem pollen-free sunflowers designed for cutting. This is expensive seed, meaning we recommend starting it indoors.
We also have sunflowers Evening Sun, Earthwalker, Skyscraper, and Autumn Beauty in our assortment; you can sow these directly into beds or just scatter them around the garden. Although they are not bred specifically for cutting, we like them for their novel colors, and at least you can make a comparison in your garden.
For seeds from the ProCut series, choose a larger plug tray, sow individual seeds into it, and cover with 2 cm of substrate. Seeds germinate in a few days at a temperature of 10 - 20 °C. In about 2 - 3 weeks, you will have beautiful seedlings that you can transplant into the bed. It is ideal to harden off the seedlings for at least a week.
If you still want to sow directly into beds, wait until the soil temperature is at least 7 °C, which works out to mid-May. Cover seeds with ~ 2 cm of soil. Germination will be slower compared to starting indoors.
Sunflowers start to bloom when the days shorten, which is why we associate them with autumn. If you plant sunflowers right after the last frosts (mid-May), the sunflower will elongate during the long days and high temperatures and create long stems. As soon as autumn approaches, it will begin to flower.
So do not be afraid to plant sunflowers successively throughout the year; we recommend every 2 - 3 weeks so that you have a supply of flowers.
We plant at a spacing of 15 - 30 cm apart. Remember that the more space you give a sunflower, the larger the flower it will create. For our purposes, we try to plant sunflowers as close to each other as possible so they create more compact flowers that we can use in bouquets. We never pinch sunflowers. The sunflower creates such a robust stem that it does not even need any form of support; it holds itself up. However, if strong rains and winds are frequent in your area, give the sunflowers some form of support just in case.
As soon as the sunflower blooms color up, you can harvest. If growing for cut flowers, however, harvest them before all the petals unfold. We recommend harvesting in the cooler part of the day and without dew, ideally in the morning.
For storing harvested sunflowers, we recommend removing all leaves from the stem; you can leave the top few small leaves. You can store sunflowers at a temperature of 2 - 4 °C for up to a week.
In a vase, sunflowers last 7 - 10 days; some types, especially the pollen-free ones, last up to 15 days with proper care (trimming stems and changing water). A trick for longer vase life for sunflowers is to sear the ends of the stems or scald the ends in hot water.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
