We recommend only starting seeds indoors. Iceland poppy is an annual and you can harvest flowers even from a winter sowing, transplanting outside in the spring after hardening off.
You will get better results if you sow poppies as biennials already at the end of summer, transplant them into a polytunnel in autumn, then the poppies will bloom for a longer time. Cover them for the winter (with straw, evergreen branches, or white non-woven fleece) if there is a risk of severe black frosts. But for us, the absolutely best result comes from a combination of both. This way you will achieve the longest poppy season from April to June.
We sow directly on the surface with a layer of vermiculite. Poppies have tiny seeds, so until they grow into proper seedlings, it is necessary to water only from the bottom, by placing the seed tray in a tray with water and letting the water wick up. Watering from above will wash away all the sown seeds. For germination, it is also possible to use misting. After germination, it is necessary to reduce the amount of moisture, because poppies are very sensitive to it.
Iceland poppy likes lower temperatures for both growth and blooming, which is why in our conditions, blooming is only possible in spring.
For the final planting site, we recommend sandy and well-draining soil; organic matter (neither compost nor manure) is not needed.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
