Sea holly Blue Star is a true star among perennials thanks to its unmistakable metallic sheen. The original species, alpine sea holly, comes from the southern Alpine regions and the Balkans, where it grows in sunny meadows and rocky slopes. It brings a uniquely distinct structure to flower beds, which stands out especially in naturally styled steppe and gravel beds. The Blue Star cultivar boasts striking, finely divided bracts in indigo blue to silvery colors, forming an impressive collar around the cylindrical inflorescence. This perennial is literally a magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, who appreciate its nectar. For its sturdiness and durability, sea holly is also highly valued in floristry. The flowers look great in fresh summer bouquets, but they put on an even bigger show in dried arrangements, where they retain their shape and color for a long time. If you leave them in the flower bed over the winter, they will provide an interesting effect even under a cap of snow or frost. Pro úspěšné pěstování máčky 'Blue Star' je naprosto klíčový výběr správného stanoviště. Tato trvalka, kterou obdržíte jako již zapěstovanou sazenici, vyžaduje plné slunce a velmi dobře propustnou půdu. Původní druh roste na kamenitých stráních, proto se jí nebude dařit v těžké, jílovité zemině, která drží vodu. Před výsadbou je vhodné zeminu vylehčit pískem nebo drobným štěrkem. Jelikož máčka vytváří dlouhý kůlový kořen, špatně snáší pozdější přesazování – místo proto vybírejte uvážlivě hned na začátku. Rostliny vysazujte do sponu přibližně 50 cm od sebe (cca 5 až 7 kusů na m²), aby měly dostatek prostoru a vzduchu, což je důležitou prevencí proti zahnívání v hustém porostu. Po výsadbě sazenici zalijte, aby se zemina dobře spojila s kořenovým balem.
Jedná se o rostlinu, která je zvyklá na chudší podmínky, proto si s hnojením nemusíte dělat starosti. Naopak, nadbytek živin (zejména dusíku) by mohl způsobit, že se rostlina bude vytahovat, polehávat a ztratí své typické ocelově modré zbarvení. Co se týče zálivky, máčka je po zakořenění velmi odolná vůči suchu. Zalévejte ji pouze v dlouhotrvajících vedrech, jinak si vystačí s dešťovými srážkami. Pěstování v nádobách je možné, ale je nutné zvolit dostatečně vysoký květináč kvůli dlouhému kořenu a zajistit perfektní drenážní vrstvu na dně, aby nedocházelo k přemokření. V nádobě bude rostlina vyžadovat o něco častější kontrolu vlhkosti než ve volné půdě.
Velkou výhodou máčky je její vynikající zdravotní stav, netrpí na běžné choroby ani škůdce, s výjimkou hrabošů, kterým mohou chutnat její sladké kořeny. Rostlina je plně mrazuvzdorná až do -28 °C (zóna 5a), takže naši zimu zvládá bez problémů. Jejím největším nepřítelem v zimním období není mráz, ale kombinace chladu a přílišného vlhka. Proto je ona propustnost půdy tak zásadní. Odkvetlé stonky na podzim nestříhejte; nejenže poskytují ochranu středu rostliny, ale ojíněné vypadají v zimní zahradě fantasticky. Řez provádějte až brzy na jaře, kdy odstraníte staré suché části těsně nad zemí, aby udělaly místo novým výhonům.
