Sweet pea 'Spencer Noel Sutton' is a climbing annual that will reward you throughout the summer with an abundance of delicate flowers in lilac to blue shades with an intense fragrance.
Since this plant requires specific care, it is more suitable for experienced gardeners. Pre-growing takes an average of 6 to 8 weeks. You can start sowing either in the autumn during November and December for very early flowering, or classically during January-February. Soak the seeds in water overnight before sowing. They germinate best at stable temperatures between 16 and 20 °C, with the first green sprouts appearing above the surface in 7 to 14 days.
For sowing, choose a 9x9cm pot; sweet peas need plenty of space from the beginning and do not tolerate root disturbance when transplanted. Sow 2 to 3 seeds in one pot and remember to cover them with a layer of substrate, as the seeds need darkness for proper germination. Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged. Once the seedlings have grown and formed a nice small plant, it is important to pinch them back in time. This will encourage branching and result in a richer, bushier plant full of flowers.
Transplant the seedlings to an outdoor location only after the frosts have passed and the soil has warmed up slightly. Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade and plant with a spacing of 10x20 cm. Since this variety climbs to a height of 100 to 250 cm, it is important to provide it with firm support, such as a tensioned net, trellis, or stakes, for it to climb. Sweet peas require regular, medium-intensity watering to prevent the soil from drying out. They bloom from May, and if you regularly remove faded flowers, they can bloom until the beginning of August. All parts of this plant are poisonous and inedible.
Harvest - Ideally, harvest the flowers in the morning. Choose those that still have unopened buds at the ends. You can harvest just the shorter stems with flowers, but longer vines with leaves are also excellent for floristry. They create an irreplaceable texture in arrangements and bouquets! Sweet pea flowers only last a few days (approx. 4-5) in a vase. If you want to extend their lifespan, we recommend letting them hydrate for 4 hours in a silver solution (silver thiosulfate) after harvest.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
