Monarda citriodora

Monarda citriodora

A beautifully scented species of Monarda, used mainly for teas. When fresh, it smells of lemons and bergamot, which is why it is called prairie bergamot. Originally a wild perennial from the USA and Mexico, it can reliably thrive here only as an annual. However, its advantage is its ability to self-seed. It is a great attraction for bees and butterflies. And it is enchanting in bouquets too. Show full description

It looks very effective already in the first season and steals all the attention at a time when other perennials are still taking their time. Garden cultivars of goldenrod are attractive and low-maintenance perennials bred from native North American wild species. Unlike them, however, they are not invasive and do not spread uncontrollably in flower beds. They are specially bred for cutting, which is why they are relatively tall, grow upright, and bloom profusely. For bouquets, we can harvest both freshly bloomed plants and stems with buds. They last 10 days in a vase. In flower beds, they are an essential food source for bees. The pastel yellow flowers of Romantic Glory combine well with other colors.

It originates from the northeastern USA and southern Canada, where it grows in damp areas, scrublands, and on coasts. It crosses very willingly with other aster species, resulting in an inexhaustible number of varieties. Unlike New England asters, they do not close their flowers at night or during unfavorable weather, making them perfect for cutting into vases. We must keep in mind their susceptibility to mildew, which can be prevented by choosing a suitable location. They last 7 to 10 days in a vase. Perovskia atriplicifolia

Perovskia are sparsely branched subshrubs, originating from areas ranging from Afghanistan to Tibet. They grow in open, sunny, rocky, and stony habitats. Their white-felted shoots and grayish aromatic leaves are striking. They fit well in sunny flower beds with other drought-loving perennials, where they create interesting structures even in the winter months. Little Spire is a smaller cultivar suitable even for pots with a soil volume of 7 liters or more.
