Thanks to its low stature (20–40 cm) and dense growth habit, it works perfectly as a ground cover plant, effectively covering bare spots and adding a fern-like structure to the flower bed with striking bronze foliage in spring and autumn.
Planting and year-round care
Plant the seedlings so that the crown of the plant is neither buried too deep nor sticking out above the surface. The ideal planting density is 9–12 plants per m², which corresponds to spacing of about 35 cm. A crucial factor for the prosperity of the Astilbe (Goatsbeard) is moisture. The soil should always be slightly damp, but not waterlogged. During periods of drought or when grown in drier areas, regular watering is necessary. As for maintenance, this is a long-lived perennial that won't burden you with pest or disease control, as it is naturally resistant to them. In spring, we recommend removing old dead leaves from the previous season to make room for new, fresh growth.
Container growing and overwintering
Thanks to its miniature size, Astilbe 'Bronze' is an excellent choice for growing in containers. If you choose this option, select a pot with a drainage hole and place a layer of gravel or expanded clay at the bottom so the roots do not sit in water. Use a quality substrate for perennials and place the pot in the shade. Remember that plants in pots are entirely dependent on your watering and nutrients, so fertilize regularly during the season. In terms of frost hardiness, the plant is extremely resilient (zone 4a, tolerates temperatures down to -34 °C) and will easily survive even harsh winters in the ground without cover. However, for plants in containers, it is advisable to wrap the pot in jute or polystyrene for the winter, as frost acts on the roots more intensely from all sides than it does in the ground.
