Peony roots are living material, which is why we store them under specific conditions — we must ensure the roots have sufficient moisture to prevent excessive drying. However, when stored in moisture, a light surface mold may appear; this is a cosmetic phenomenon that does not affect subsequent growth. We pack the roots right before dispatch to keep their storage time in closed packaging as short as possible.

Therefore, do not delay planting the peonies so that their roots do not dry out too much during storage; as we have already written, storage is more demanding. When planting, it is necessary to pay attention to the correct planting depth and not to "drown" the plants, because then they would not bloom. We plant them so that after watering, the buds of the shoots protrude slightly above the surface of the substrate with their tips. The lowest buds should be a maximum of 2-3 centimeters below the surface. The planting hole should be twice as wide and deep as the peony root. Expect the soil to settle after watering. If you are planting late in the autumn, you can cover the new plants with brushwood before winter.

Peonies bloom best in a sunny spot. However, they are quite adaptable and can also thrive in partially shaded locations, although they need a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight for abundant flowering. All peonies need plenty of space around them; they do not like competition from shrubs or hedges. You should reserve an area of one square meter for a peony, where they will not have to compete even with other vigorously growing perennials.
Peonies need well-draining, loamy, and nutrient-rich garden soil that retains adequate moisture well. They cannot tolerate waterlogging in overly heavy soil.

Newly planted peonies need watering, especially during their first spring in periods of drought. Mature peonies will be more resilient, and watering will come in handy only in the event of a very dry spring and early summer. After flowering, they usually no longer have problems with summer drought.
Peonies need plenty of nutrients; an organic fertilizer rich in potassium in the spring is suitable. On the other hand, beware of too much nitrogen. The plants would then be more susceptible to fungal diseases. In the autumn, you can spread a one-centimeter-thin layer of mature compost around the plant.
Maintain a sufficient distance when planting so that air circulates well between the plants. Regularly remove dead flowers, and remove any diseased leaves. These must not be placed on the compost, but thrown away with regular household waste.
In the first years after planting, we remove side buds so that the plants grow stronger. In late autumn, you can remove dead leaves. Count on support for the plants; all herbaceous peonies need it. Watch out for spring frosts, especially if they follow a mild winter. Sprouting flower buds can tolerate temperatures dropping to -3°C; at lower temperatures, they die off. In this case, we protect the peonies with non-woven fabric.
Choose the location well; peonies prefer undisturbed growth without transplanting. This is possible with older plants, which we divide during the process, ensuring each part has three to seven buds. The most suitable period is from September to October.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
Peony Jacorma is also available in this form.
