Peony Coral Charm, Loukykvět

Paeonia

The 'Coral Charm' peony captivates with its dark coral buds, which gradually open into large, semi-double flowers. During blooming, it offers a breathtaking color transformation, with tones shifting from vibrant pink through salmon and peach to a soft cream. These long-lived perennials require a certain amount of patience from the gardener. It takes them several years to grow to their full beauty, and blooming in the very first year after planting is more the exception than the rule. For successful growing, not only time is key, but also the right conditions and plenty of space in the flower bed – we therefore recommend studying our growing guide. Most cultivars of herbaceous peonies are derived from the Chinese and common peonies, which were a traditional part of monastery gardens. Today, we love to combine them with other perennials, ornamental grasses, and bulbs.

You can sow the seeds indoors on a windowsill starting in April, or directly into a spot in the flower bed from May to July. Germination takes only a few days. It grows to a height of about one meter, forms beautifully sturdy stems, and blooms from June until October, constantly attracting bees and butterflies. Zinnia Cresto Peachy Pink, Loukykvět

Zinnia elegans

Zinnia 'Cresto Peachy Pink' brings a refreshing palette of colors full of cool tones to summer flower beds. Growing this charming annual from seeds is ideal even for complete beginners. The 'Cresto' series is characterized by fully double, scabiosa-flowered types that catch the eye with their unconventional shape and fluffy centers. Compared to the 'Peaches & Cream' variety, this variant offers cooler shades of pink, from pastel to deep bubblegum, with delicate touches of tangerine and apricot. The plants grow to a height of sixty to ninety centimeters, and occasional pinching will benefit them with richer branching. In the garden, they form beautiful combinations with delicate ornamental grasses or other annuals in similar tones. Zinnia also acts as a reliable magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. Long, sturdy stems, which sometimes benefit from light support, make this flower the perfect material for cutting. The colorful flowers last for many days in a vase and will enliven any summer interior.

Cultivation

GENERAL INFO

Peony roots are living material, which is why we store them under specific conditions — we must ensure sufficient moisture for the roots to prevent them from drying out excessively. When stored in damp conditions, however, a light surface mold may appear; this is a cosmetic phenomenon that does not affect subsequent growth. We pack the roots just before shipping so that their time in a closed package is as short as possible.

PLANTING

Do not delay planting your peonies, so their roots do not dry out too much during storage; as we mentioned, storage is demanding. When planting, it is necessary to pay attention to the correct planting depth and not "drown" the plants, as they would then not bloom. We plant them so that, after watering, the shoot buds slightly protrude above the surface of the substrate. The lowest buds should be a maximum of 2-3 centimeters below the surface. The planting hole should be twice as wide and deep as the peony root. Expect the soil to settle after watering. If you are planting late in the autumn, you can cover the new plants with brushwood before winter.

LOCATION

Peonies bloom best in a sunny spot. However, they are quite adaptable and can thrive in semi-shaded positions, though for abundant flowering they need at least 6 hours of sunshine. All peonies need plenty of space around them; they do not like competition from shrubs or hedges. You should reserve an area of one square meter for a peony, where they will not be competed with by other lushly growing perennials.

SOIL CONDITIONS

Peonies need permeable, loamy, and nutrient-rich garden soil that retains reasonable moisture well. They do not tolerate waterlogging in overly heavy soil.

WATERING

Newly planted peonies need watering especially during their first spring during dry periods. Mature peonies are more resilient, and watering is only useful in the event of a very dry spring and early summer. After blooming, they generally do not have issues with summer drought.

FERTILIZATION

Peonies need plenty of nutrients; an organic fertilizer rich in potassium is suitable in the spring. Conversely, watch out for excessive amounts of nitrogen. The plants would then be more susceptible to fungal diseases. In the autumn, you can spread a centimeter-thin layer of well-matured compost around the plant.

DISEASE PREVENTION

Maintain sufficient distance when planting so that air can circulate well between the plants. Regularly remove dead flowers and remove any diseased leaves. These must not be put in the compost but should be disposed of with regular household waste.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

In the first years after planting, we remove side buds so that the plants grow stronger. At the end of autumn, you can remove dead leaves. Expect to provide support for the plants; all herbaceous peonies need it. Watch out for spring frosts, especially if they follow a mild winter. Sprouting flower buds can tolerate temperatures dropping to -3°C; at lower temperatures, they die. In this case, protect the peonies with non-woven fabric.

(NOT) TRANSPLANTING

Choose the location carefully; peonies prefer undisturbed growth without transplanting. This is possible with older plants, which can be divided so that each part has three to seven buds. The most suitable period is from September to October.

The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.

Paeonia

Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and before you see abundant flowering. Therefore, a blooming peony the very first year after planting is rather an exception, definitely not the rule. To bloom, it needs the right conditions in addition to time. Study our growing guide. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest-bred garden plants, and most cultivars have their origins in Chinese and medicinal peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them enough space in the flowerbed. Gardenia is popular as a wedding peony thanks to its color. Ivory white fragrant flowers unfold from pink buds. It blooms in the middle of the peony season. It was bred in 1955.
