Growing the 'Signum' tulip is very easy and ideal even for absolute beginners who want to brighten up their spring garden with reliable flowers. These popular bulbous plants require a sunny to partially shaded location with well-permeable, loamy soil rich in humus for their healthy growth. Proper soil permeability is absolutely key, because in heavy and permanently waterlogged soil, the bulbs can very quickly begin to rot. We always recommend that customers thoroughly loosen the soil before planting and potentially enrich it with mature compost. If you purchase bulbs well in advance of the actual planting, it is essential to store them properly. Store them in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place to prevent premature sprouting or drying out, until the right time arrives for their safe placement in the bed.
Actual planting takes place exclusively in the autumn, ideally in the months of September, October, and November, when high summer temperatures no longer pose a threat and the soil is sufficiently cool. Always plant the bulbs with the tip facing upward at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters. To ensure your spring bed looks truly rich and complete, maintain an optimal spacing of 10 to 15 centimeters apart, which in practice corresponds to roughly 50 to 60 bulbs per square meter. After planting, gently press the soil down and lightly water so the bulbs root better. This plant is fully frost-hardy and can withstand extreme temperature drops down to an incredible -34 °C. Thanks to this excellent resistance, it does not require any special protection over the winter in the form of spruce branches or mulch, because the bulbs overwinter perfectly safely directly in the ground under the snow cover.
In the spring, usually during April and May, you can look forward to beautiful light pink flowers that grow to a height of 40 to 50 centimeters. The 'Signum' tulip has exceptionally strong and thick stems, making it great for cutting for vases and for spring forcing. During active vegetation, keep watering at a moderate level; the soil should not dry out over a long period, but the bulbs must definitely not stand in water. After flowering, it is absolutely essential to cut off only the developing seed head and leave the green leaves on the plant to naturally yellow and dry out. The bulb draws all the necessary nutrients for the next season from them. Pay increased attention only to basic prevention against grey mold and fusarium rot. You can best prevent these problems by not overwatering the plants and by correctly choosing a sufficiently permeable substrate at the beginning of cultivation.
