Panicle Hydrangea Silver Dollar

The 'Silver Dollar' panicle hydrangea is not as demanding regarding soil acidity as blue hydrangeas, but still prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.6–7).

• The soil should primarily be nutritious and humus-rich.
• When planting, we recommend mixing garden soil with peat or a special substrate for hydrangeas.
• Drainage is important – roots could rot in heavy clay soil, so in such a case, add drainage to the bottom of the hole.

Unlike classic bigleaf hydrangeas, which require shade, the panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) is much more tolerant. The Silver Dollar variety will thrive best in a sunny spot to partial shade.

• Sun: Supports richer flowering and stronger stems but requires regular and heavy watering.
• Partial shade: Ideal if you cannot ensure daily watering on hot days.
• Full shade: We do not recommend this; the plant would bloom little and stretch towards the light.

Pruning is key for panicle hydrangea because it blooms on so-called new wood (shoots that grow in the given year). We always cut it early in the spring (March), before leaves bud.

There are two approaches to pruning:

1. Deep cut: Shorten last year's shoots to approx. 15 cm above the ground (2–3 buds). The result will be huge inflorescences on long stems, but there will be fewer of them.
2. More careful cut: Shorten shoots by 1/3 to 1/2. The shrub will be taller, denser, and have more smaller flowers.

Do not be afraid to cut into it; without pruning, the shrub thickens and the flowers get smaller.

With panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata), blue color cannot be achieved by changing soil pH – only bigleaf hydrangea can do that.

The Silver Dollar cultivar has its specific color transformation:

1. When blooming, the flowers are fresh greenish to creamy.
2. In full bloom, they are radiant white (hence the name Silver Dollar).
3. In autumn, when fading, they acquire only a very soft pink tinge, unlike other varieties that turn significantly red.

Since this is a container-grown seedling, you can plant it practically any time during the growing season (from spring to autumn) as long as it is not freezing. However, the most ideal time is spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November).

• Spring planting: The plant has enough time to root before winter but requires more frequent watering during the first summer.
• Autumn planting: The soil is warm and moist, which supports root growth. The plant has time to acclimatize before spring budding.

Yes, the panicle hydrangea belongs among the hardiest hydrangeas. The Silver Dollar variety is fully frost-hardy down to approx. -34 °C, so it overwinters without problems in our conditions.

• In a flowerbed: It is not necessary to cover the above-ground part. We only recommend mounding a layer of mulch or leaves around the roots in autumn.
• In a pot: The root ball is more susceptible to freezing through. Wrap the container with bubble wrap, polystyrene, or jute and place it in a sheltered spot (e.g., against the house wall).

Panicle hydrangeas are "water-loving" plants (the botanical name Hydrangea comes from the Greek word for water). The soil should be constantly slightly moist, but not waterlogged.

• After planting: Water intensively until the plant roots properly.
• In summer: On hot days, water daily, ideally in the morning or evening. If the plant's leaves droop, it is a signal of acute water shortage.
• Tip: Mulching with bark around the base of the plant will help significantly to keep moisture in the soil.

Panicle hydrangeas are relatively resistant, but the following may appear on them:

• Aphids: Often attack young shoots. They can be washed off with a stream of water or treated with a natural oil or soapy water-based spray.
• Spider mites: Appear in dry and hot weather (fine webs on the underside of leaves). Increasing humidity (misting) helps, and in case of severe infestation, use acaricides.
• Slugs/Snails: Can nibble on young leaves, but they are usually not a fatal problem for woody shrubs.

Thanks to its neutral white color, 'Silver Dollar' goes well with almost anything. It stands out in the company of:

• Acid-loving plants: Rhododendrons, azaleas, and heathers.
• Perennials for partial shade: Hostas, coral bells (Heuchera), or astilbes.
• Ornamental grasses: Miscanthus or fountain grass add lightness and movement to the planting.

1. Unsuitable soil pH: The soil is too calcareous (alkaline), which prevents the plant from absorbing iron.

Solution: Fertilize the plant with a special preparation against chlorosis (containing chelated iron) and add peat or soil-acidifying fertilizer.

How to do it:

1. Cut the flowers only at the end of summer or in autumn, when they start to feel like paper to the touch and rustle slightly.

Yes, caution is needed. All parts of hydrangeas contain substances (cyanogenic glycosides) that are mildly toxic to humans and animals (dogs, cats, horses).
