Growing this specific parrot-type 'Madonna' tulip is very easy and ideal even for complete beginners. The high-quality large bulbs you receive from us are best stored in a cool, well-ventilated, dry, and dark place after receipt until the right time for moving them outdoors arrives. This time is autumn, ideally in the months of September, October, or November, when there is no longer a risk of excessively high temperatures and the soil begins to cool down. Always carefully choose a sunny or slightly shaded spot for these tulips. The soil should ideally be humus-rich and, above all, very well-draining so that excess winter and spring moisture does not linger, which could irreparably harm the bulbs.
Planting into the flowerbed is fast and undemanding. Prepare holes with a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters. Plant them at the same distance apart, which is about 10 to 15 centimeters. If you are planning a more extensive planting, count on about 40 to 60 bulbs per square meter to achieve a full and rich look. Always plant the tulips with the tip facing up and the root plate facing down. After planting, it is important to water the soil slightly so that the bulbs root better. During the spring, when the plants are actively growing and forming buds, keep the soil moderately moist. Do not overdo the watering, however; tulips absolutely do not need to stand in water.
In April and May, the tulip will reward you with giant flowers with a creamy, gold-green coloring on 40 to 50-centimeter-tall stems. They are excellent for cutting for vases, where their twisted leaves and gradually opening flowers will create a stunning and unconventional effect. After full flowering, remove the seed pod, but let the leaves naturally turn yellow and wither—the bulb will draw nutrients from them for the next year. You do not need to worry about winterizing at all because the bulbs are fully frost-hardy down to an extreme -40 °C. However, watch out for excessive moisture, which could cause molds such as gray or fusarium rot, or the transmission of mosaic virus. Prevention lies in choosing well-draining soil and a sunny location.
