Goldenrod Golden Glory
The 'Golden Glory' goldenrod is a radiant and completely undemanding perennial that will bring plenty of positive energy to the garden at the end of summer. The original wild species originate from North America and often carry the reputation of uninvited guests in our region. But you don't have to worry at all. These modern garden cultivars are bred to behave, act moderately, and do not spread uncontrollably across the flower bed. In a sunny spot with well-drained loamy soil, they quickly grow into abundant clumps. For ideal growth, we recommend maintaining a spacing of about fifty centimeters, which corresponds to roughly four to six plants per square meter. They will easily handle even severe frosts dropping down to minus twenty-eight degrees.
From August to October, it produces upright stems fifty to a hundred centimeters tall that carry rich inflorescences. The fresh green leaves and golden-yellow flowers of the 'Golden Glory' cultivar literally shine from afar and act as a perfect magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, providing them with much-needed food before winter arrives. In flower beds, the plant needs no support and does not suffer from diseases or pests, so even a complete beginner can easily manage its care. Definitely do not cut the dead stems for winter. Their silhouette, covered with frost, creates a wonderful winter effect.
Goldenrod is specially bred for cutting and will become a great addition to your autumn bouquets. The flowers will stay beautiful in a vase for about ten days, and you can cut both fully blooming stems and those with small buds. Cultivation
Goldenrod is an ideal choice for a sunny location, where its beauty and rich flowering will fully stand out. Plant the supplied seedling in loamy, humous, and well-drained soil. When planting, maintain a spacing of approximately 50 cm, which corresponds to 4 to 6 plants per square meter. This spacing is important to ensure good air circulation around the leaves, which benefits the plant and keeps it in perfect condition. Although it is a very vital and long-lived perennial, this modern cultivar, unlike older species, does not spread uncontrollably around the flower beds and does not self-seed. Your garden will thus gain a stable and disciplined plant that won't cause you any extra worries.
During the growing season, keep the soil slightly moist. Goldenrod will appreciate watering especially in longer dry periods, which will prevent unnecessary stress to the plant and potential weakening. The plant is otherwise absolutely undemanding and will please you with the fact that it does not suffer from any common diseases nor is it attacked by pests. If you only have a terrace or balcony available, you can also successfully grow this perennial in a spacious container. For growing in a pot, choose a sufficiently deep container with drainage holes, use a high-quality substrate mixed with compost, and do not forget about more regular watering, because soil in containers dries out much faster than in the open ground.
Care at the end of the season and over the winter is very easy. The strong straight stems grow to a height of 50 to 100 cm and do not need any support. You can safely leave faded stems on the flower beds even through the winter, because rime on dry inflorescences creates a wonderful winter effect. Goldenrod is fully frost-resistant down to -28 °C, so it requires no special winter protection. Perform a hard pruning of the entire plant just above the ground only in early spring, before the new shoots begin to sprout. This will support overall vitality and prepare the plant for another bountiful season.
