Solidago canadensis

Garden cultivars of goldenrod are attractive and low-maintenance perennials bred from native North American wild species. Unlike them, however, they are not invasive and do not spread uncontrollably in flower beds. They are specially bred for cutting, which is why they are relatively tall, grow upright, and bloom profusely. For bouquets, we can harvest both freshly bloomed plants and stems with buds. They last 10 days in a vase. In flower beds, they are an essential food source for bees. The pastel yellow flowers of Romantic Glory combine well with other colors.

Ballota pseudodictamnus

A drought-loving herb originally from the Mediterranean. Grown for its grey-white felted stems and leaves. The dead-nettle-like flowers are also interesting and are a great attraction for bees. The plant does not lose interest even after flowering, precisely because of its unusual silvery coloring and saucer-shaped flower calyxes. In this, it resembles another floral delicacy – Bells of Ireland. Unlike them, however, it is perennial and withstands our frosts in the right location. It comes from Turkey, Libya, Greece, and Crete, which is why we plant it, for example, in gravel beds. We can also grow it successfully in a pot. Unusual greenery for bouquets. Lasts 10 days in a vase.

The foxglove beardtongue Mystica is a relatively robust and long-lived perennial with attractive bronze-purple foliage and white-purple flowers. Decorative spent inflorescences continue to adorn beds well into winter. However, the plant can also be cut back after flowering to encourage new growth. The main difference between the penstemon Mystica and Husker Red lies in the foliage. Mystica leaves should be more durable and visually attractive even after the first frosts. We recommend cutting the penstemon back after flowering so it shoots up again. It lasts 5 to 7 days in a vase.

Typical for the Monarda Beauty of Cobham is the distinct contrast between purple-violet bracts and soft pink flowers. Before that, they tend to wilt, and the stems do not hold the flower in an upright position. All parts of the plant are poisonous. Queens White has beautiful simple flowers in white.

Cultivation

This species of sage originates from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms profusely flowering small clumps with straight, upright stems. In flower beds, it looks best in groups. It is traditionally planted as a companion to roses due to the matching flowering time. However, it looks equally good in mixed drought-tolerant steppe plantings with grasses. It is an excellent food source for bees. Lasts 7 days in a vase. Amethyst is an elegant variety with long stems and a pink flower color that is unusual for sages.

Helleborus orientalis

Hellebores are evergreen perennials that form slowly spreading clumps of leathery, dark green leaves. The stems usually bear four to five flowers. They bloom very early, as early as late winter and early spring. They are usable for vases only after conspicuous seed pods form in the center of the flower and the flower matures. Earlier, they tend to wilt and the stems cannot hold the flower in an upright position. All parts of the plant are poisonous. Double Ellen White is an almost pure white, double-flowered hellebore. The petals are slightly wavy and the bottom row of petals is lightly tinged with green.
