Tato okrasná tráva miluje plné slunce a vyžaduje suchou, propustnou a spíše chudou nebo kamenitou půdu. Přemokření a těžké jílovité zeminy jí nesvědčí. Při výsadbě dodržujte spon 40 až 60 centimetrů, což odpovídá zhruba třem až pěti rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Dostatečný prostor zajistí správnou cirkulaci vzduchu a umožní trsům dorůst do jejich přirozené výšky kolem 60 až 100 centimetrů. Ideálními sousedy jsou suchomilné rostliny a cibuloviny.
Zálivku tato trvalka potřebuje pouze krátce po výsadbě, než spolehlivě zakoření. Později si vystačí s přirozenými srážkami a skvěle zvládá i delší období sucha. Hnojení není vůbec nutné, v bohatých půdách by naopak ztrácela svůj pevný tvar a poléhala. Kavyl můžete bez obav pěstovat také v nádobách na terase nebo balkonu. Pro pěstování v květináči použijte propustný substrát smíchaný s pískem a na dno nádoby nezapomeňte umístit silnou drenážní vrstvu z keramzitu nebo štěrku. V nádobě rostlina vysychá rychleji, proto ji občas mírně zalijte, ale vždy dbejte na to, aby miska pod květináčem nezůstávala plná vody.
Během vegetační sezóny kavyl nevyžaduje žádnou speciální péči, navíc netrpí na žádné škůdce ani choroby. Krémové a béžové laty nakvétají od června až do října. Na podzim trávu rozhodně nestříhejte. Suchá stébla s květenstvími nejenže vytváří nádherný zimní efekt pod vrstvou jinovatky, ale hlavně chrání střed rostliny před zimní vlhkostí. Rostlina je plně mrazuvzdorná až do -28 °C, takže zimu zvládne bez problémů. Teprve na jaře, těsně před rašením nových listů, seřízněte celý trs zhruba pět až deset centimetrů nad zemí. Na vhodném stanovišti se kavyl ochotně přesévá, takže vám na zahradě vydrží dlouhé roky.

Thanks to its origin, it is extremely resilient, loves full sun, and well-drained sandy or loamy soil. It tolerates drought excellently, and even a beginner can easily manage its cultivation.
