Feather grass

This is a completely hardy and tough perennial classified in hardiness zone 5a. This means that it withstands even very deep frosts without any problems, down to extreme temperatures in the range of -26 °C to -28.9 °C. It does not need any special winter protection (such as covering with evergreen boughs or non-woven fabric) as long as it is planted in proper, well-drained soil.

It is rightfully among the longest-blooming ornamental grasses of all. It begins to produce cream, beige, and silver feathery inflorescences as early as the beginning of summer, usually during June. It then continues to bloom tirelessly throughout July, August, and September, often remaining highly attractive until the end of October.

This grass originates from sunny and gravelly slopes, so it strictly requires full sun for its growth. As for the soil, it thrives best in poor, sandy, or stony earth that is perfectly permeable and does not retain excess water. Unfortunately, it will not thrive in heavy, clay-like, and permanently waterlogged soils.

Yes, you can very successfully grow feather grass in a spacious pot on a sunny balcony or terrace. The choice of container is essential, however. It must have a drainage hole at the bottom and a generous drainage layer (for example, made of expanded clay or coarse gravel). Additionally, the potting soil should be mixed with regular sand to lighten it, ensuring that any excess rainwater can always drain away quickly.

Feather grass is a very elegant and airy ornamental grass that grows to a height of 60 to 100 centimeters. It forms neat tufts of green leaves. From the beginning of summer until autumn, the plant is adorned with feathery inflorescences in shades of beige, cream, and silver. The flowers arch gracefully, bringing beautiful movement to the garden as they react to even the slightest breeze.

This is a reliable, long-lived perennial that grows in neat clumps and is not aggressively invasive via underground runners. However, in a suitable sunny location with well-draining soil, it will very readily self-seed in the surrounding area. If you would like to rejuvenate an older clump or propagate it intentionally, the easiest and fastest way is to dig it up and divide it with a sharp spade, ideally in early spring.

Certainly, Calamagrostis is a huge asset for florists and home decor enthusiasts. Its long, sturdy stems with feathery silver panicles are excellent for cutting and adding to fresh summer and autumn bouquets. It is also perfect for drying – it easily maintains its beautiful shape and delicate color for a long time, whether in a vase without water or in dried arrangements.

This specific problem almost always points to insufficient drainage and soil that is too heavy and clayey, which retains water for too long. Although Calamagrostis easily tolerates extreme frosts down to -28 °C, it is also very sensitive to excessive winter moisture. If its roots spend the whole winter in waterlogged soil, they can easily rot or suffocate in an icy pocket. When planting in the future, be sure to add a generous amount of coarse gravel or sand to the planting hole.

You can be completely at ease; Calamagrostis is entirely problem-free in terms of plant protection. It does not suffer from any common fungal diseases (unless it is permanently waterlogged in poor soil), and it is avoided by all common garden pests. It is an excellent and extremely hardy choice that will not disappoint even complete beginners.
