Summer appearance: During the summer, the fountain grass forms a dense and compact clump of lush green, long, and narrow leaves. Autumn transformation: 'Cassian' is a variety highly valued specifically for its spectacular autumn play of colors. In early autumn, the foliage reliably and quite dramatically changes into dazzling golden-orange tones, which often take on a subtle reddish hue. This allows it to brighten up any autumn garden.

Blooming period: The 'Cassian' variety is among those most popular with gardeners because it blooms very early and exceptionally abundantly. The first beautiful inflorescences begin to appear as early as July and gradually adorn the plant until late October. Flower appearance: The flowers have the characteristic form of soft, fluffy brushes. They are colored in warm brown and yellow shades and sway with extraordinary elegance in the summer and autumn breeze.

Sprouting time: In all likelihood, it is not dead; there is no reason to panic. It is perfectly typical and natural for fountain grasses to wake up and sprout very late in the spring. This often happens only at the end of April or during May, once the soil outdoors has been sufficiently warmed by the sun. Gardener's tip: Until then, the pruned clump may look a bit sad in the garden bed. Therefore, we highly recommend planting early spring bulbs (such as daffodils or crocuses) in close proximity to the fountain grass, which will beautifully bridge this visual waiting period.

Cause of the problem: If, after several successful seasons of growing in the same spot, the clump begins to bloom less or you notice that its center is becoming dry and dying out, the plant is signaling that it is gradually losing vitality and needs rejuvenation. Easy solution: Simply dig up the entire clump early in the spring, use a spade to divide it into several smaller healthy sections, and then replant them immediately in a new location in fresh, nutrient-rich soil.

Propagation method: Since you receive a high-quality, mature seedling from us, the simplest, fastest, and most effective way to propagate it is by vegetative division of the clumps. Right time: Carry out this rejuvenation process exclusively in the spring (April is ideal), as soon as the plant starts to sprout slightly after its winter pruning. Forcefully divide the dug-up clump with a sharp spade, immediately plant the resulting smaller seedlings, and then water them very thoroughly.

Indoor use: Yes, the decorative, bottlebrush-like autumn flowers of the fountain grass are absolutely perfect for such purposes. They look stunning fresh in vases as well as acting as a focal point in dried arrangements. How to dry properly: If you wish to dry them for winter arrangements, cut the stems just after they have fully unfolded on the plant, while they are still at their firmest and have not yet started to shed naturally. Ideally, dry them tied in small bunches, hanging flower-side down in a well-ventilated, dry, and dark room.

Origin of the name: Its scientific Latin name Pennisetum is very aptly derived from two ancient Latin words: penna (meaning feather) and seta (meaning bristle). This combination perfectly and poetically describes the unmistakable, fluffy appearance of its delicate autumn inflorescences.

Toxicity and safety: You have no cause for concern. Pennisetum alopecuroides is a completely safe plant in terms of toxicity. It is not poisonous or otherwise dangerous to adults, young children, playful dogs, cats, or any other household pets. Animal grazing: Domestic cats sometimes instinctively nibble on various ornamental grasses in the garden to provide mechanical support for their digestion.
