Baptisia comes from North America, belongs to the legume family, and resembles lupine in appearance. Unlike lupine, however, it does not suffer from fungal diseases and does not taste as good to slugs. Besides the blue flowers, the large pods that adorn the plant long after flowering are interesting. North American Indians used Baptisia roots to disinfect wounds and lower fever, and leaves to dye fabrics. With Baptisia, patience is most important; it takes some time to fully establish and create a massive root system adapted to survive long periods of drought and fire. Then it is very long-lived. It was chosen as the Perennial of the Year for the 2019 season.

Vrbinu sehnutou obdržíte jako zdravou, dobře prokořeněnou sazenici, kterou můžete vysazovat od jara až do podzimu. Tato dlouhověká trvalka nejlépe prospívá na stanovištích, kde má dostatek světla, ale zároveň ochranu před nejostřejším poledním úpalem. Ideální je pro ni slunce nebo polostín. Potřebuje vlhkou půdu na chladnějším místě ve světlém stínu. Velmi dobře se jí daří v těžší hlinité nebo jílovité zemině, která je bohatá na humus a dokáže dlouhodobě udržet vlhkost. Hodí se k okrajům jezírek a do trvalkových záhonů se zajištěnou zálivkou v suchém letním období.
Při výsadbě do záhonu dodržujte spon zhruba 35 centimetrů, což odpovídá 7 až 9 rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Tento rozestup zajistí rostlinám dostatek prostoru pro zdravý vývoj a dobrou cirkulaci vzduchu. Pro úspěšné pěstování pamatujte na následující kroky:
- Pravidelná zálivka: Půda by neměla nikdy zcela vyschnout, vrbina patří mezi silně vlhkomilné druhy.
- Jarní hnojení: Přidání vrstvy kvalitního kompostu podpoří bujný růst a kvetení.
- Odstraňování květů: Během léta odstřihávejte odkvetlé klasy pro lepší celkovou vitalitu rostliny.
Velkou výhodou vrbiny je, že netrpí na žádné běžné choroby a vyhýbají se jí i škůdci, pěstování je tak zcela bezproblémové i pro začátečníky. Pokud nemáte prostornou zahradu, můžete sazenici pěstovat i v objemnějším květináči nebo truhlíku na terase. V nádobě však zemina vysychá rychleji, proto je nutné hlídat každodenní zálivku a zvolit nádobu s dobrým odtokem. Sazenice je vysoce mrazuvzdorná a snese teploty až do -34 °C. Na zimu nepotřebuje zvláštní ochranu, staré stonky stačí seříznout až těsně nad zemí brzy na jaře.

This species of sage originally comes from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms profusely flowering small clumps with straight upright stems. In flower beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, due to the identical flowering time, it is planted as a companion to roses. However, it will look just as good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It lasts 7 days in a vase. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.
