Heidezwerg purple moor grass is a highly adaptable grass that naturally grows in wet pastures, fens, and moorlands. Thanks to its origins, it loves slightly acidic and moister soils, but it can also handle a sunny spot provided it has enough moisture. It is planted in gardens primarily for its exceptional autumn display, when the clumps of leaves turn into vibrant golden to orange tones that literally shine on dull days. The Heidezwerg cultivar grows to a compact height and is cultivated for its dark purple to purplish inflorescences on upright stalks. These appear from August to October, bringing an interesting vertical structure to the flower beds. The plant looks beautiful in winter too, when adorned with frost, which is why it should not be cut back until spring. The inflorescences are excellent for cutting for a vase or drying for arrangements, where they last a very long time.

Pro úspěšné pěstování bezkolence modrého 'Heidezwerg' je klíčový výběr správného stanoviště, které by mělo imitovat jeho přirozené prostředí vlhkých slatí a vřesovišť. Této okrasné trávě se nejlépe daří na slunném stanovišti až v polostínu, přičemž platí jednoduché pravidlo: čím více slunce rostlině dopřejete, tím více vláhy bude potřebovat. Půda by měla být ideálně hlinitá, propustná, ale schopná zadržet vodu, a s vyšším podílem humusu. Bezkolenec miluje kyselejší půdní reakci, proto se mu bude skvěle dařit ve společenství s vřesy, azalkami nebo rododendrony. Při výsadbě dodržujte doporučený spon přibližně 50 cm (5 až 7 rostlin na m²), aby měly jednotlivé trsy dostatek prostoru pro cirkulaci vzduchu a zároveň časem vytvořily zapojený porost.
Péče o tuto dlouhověkou vytrvalou trávu je velmi snadná a je vhodná i pro naprosté začátečníky. Nejdůležitějším bodem údržby je zálivka, na kterou byste neměli zapomínat především v horkých letních měsících – půda by neměla nikdy zcela vyschnout. Na druhou stranu, rostlina nesmí stát dlouhodobě ve vodě, aby neuhnívaly kořeny. Co se týče hnojení, bezkolenec je skromný; postačí mu přirozený humus v půdě nebo lehké přihnojení kompostem na jaře. Velkým benefitem kultivaru 'Heidezwerg' je jeho vynikající zdravotní stav, netrpí na žádné specifické choroby ani škůdce, takže chemická ochrana není nutná. Rostlina je plně mrazuvzdorná až do -34 °C, takže nevyžaduje žádné složité zimní zakrývání.
Specifickou péči vyžaduje rostlina v období podzimu a zimy. Ačkoliv se listy na podzim krásně zbarvují do zlatavých a oranžových tónů a později usychají, nikdy je nestříhejte před zimou. Uschlá hmota listů a stébel slouží jako přirozená ochrana středu trsu (srdíčka) před mrazem a nadměrnou vlhkostí. Navíc ojíněná stébla působí v zimní zahradě velmi dekorativně. Řez provádíme až brzy na jaře, ideálně v březnu nebo začátkem dubna, kdy celý trs sestřihneme nízko nad zemí (cca 5–10 cm). Tím podpoříte tvorbu nových, zdravých listů a hustý růst. Pokud byste chtěli tuto kompaktní trávu pěstovat v nádobě, je to možné, ale dbejte na to, aby květináč měl odtokové otvory a drenážní vrstvu. V nádobách substrát vysychá mnohem rychleji, proto bude nutná častější a pravidelná zálivka.
