The Oriental poppy originates from the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on rocky slopes and dry meadows. It blooms with large bowl-shaped flowers on tall stems. Like all poppies, for use in bouquets, we harvest them as soon as the buds color up and "crack". Additionally, we briefly (for about 20 seconds) sear the ends of the stems with a flame and immediately place them in cold water. Then they last in a vase for 4 days. The strikingly hairy and large leaves die back shortly after flowering, and the plant must rest until spring to gather strength. A portion of the leaves sprouts again in late summer. Therefore, it is advisable to plant other perennials in close proximity that sprout later and can draw attention to themselves during the poppy's pause. Royal Wedding flowers have white petals with a dark burgundy spot in the center of the flower.

Tento pestrolistý tužebník je skutečnou ozdobou vlhkých partií zahrady a jeho pěstování vychází z jeho přirozených nároků na vodu. Sazenice vysazujeme do dobře připravené, kypřejší půdy obohacené o humus, která však musí mít schopnost zadržovat vláhu. Výborně se mu daří v jílovitých a těžších půdách. Stanoviště volte s rozvahou – na slunci bude mít rostlina nejvýraznější vybarvení listů a bohaté kvetení, ale pouze pokud kořeny nikdy nevyschnou. V polostínu je péče o zálivku snazší, ale kvetení může být o něco slabší. Vzhledem k tomu, že jde o dlouhověkou trvalku, vyplatí se při výsadbě přidat do jámy kvalitní kompost. Rostliny sázejte tak hluboko, jak rostly v kontejneru, a po výsadbě je důkladně prolijte.
Během sezóny je údržba minimální, tužebník 'Variegata' roste bujně a zdravě bez nutnosti chemické ochrany, jelikož ho netrápí škůdci ani nemoci. Pro udržení vlhkosti v půdě je velmi vhodné okolí rostliny zamulčovat, což omezí odpar vody. Pokud by se vám zdálo, že rostlina po odkvětu ztrácí na atraktivitě, můžete ji sestřihnout – často pak obrazí novými, svěžími listy, které budou zdobit záhon až do podzimu. Hnojení není nezbytně nutné, pokud je půda výživná, ale pro maximální vzrůst lze na jaře doplnit k rostlinám vyzrálý kompost.
Pokud uvažujete o pěstování tužebníku v truhlíku nebo květináči na balkoně, připravte se na to, že půjde o „žíznivého nájemníka“. Vzhledem k jeho velikosti a nárokům na vodu není pěstování v malých nádobách ideální. Pokud však nemáte zahradu, zvolte co největší nádobu s humózním substrátem a ideálně samozavlažovacím systémem. V nádobě je rostlina náchylnější na přemrznutí kořenového balu, přestože ve volné půdě zvládá mrazy až -40 °C, proto je vhodné květináč na zimu obalit jutou nebo polystyrenem, případně jej zapustit do země. Každé jaro pak nezapomeňte odstranit suché loňské listy, aby mohla rostlina znovu vyrašit v plné kráse.

Calamint
An undemanding and modest perennial that blooms with a large number of tiny flowers. It blooms for a record-breaking length of time throughout late summer and autumn. It forms smaller, compact, airy bushes that release a minty-spicy scent. The thyme-like flowers attract bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. It will look good among roses as well as in naturalistic steppe beds, perhaps with lower grasses. This calamint is generally more vigorous. It differs from other calamints with felted leaves by its record flowering length, stiff and shiny leaves, and also a larger number of flowers that do not form seeds and are therefore maximally durable. Sometimes sold under the cultivar name 'Triumphator'.
