Japanese forest grass Greenhills is one of the most elegant ornamental grasses you can plant in the shady corners of your garden. It originates from the moist rocky slopes of the Japanese island of Honshu, which predestines its growing requirements. It loves humus-rich, well-draining soil that does not dry out, and it thrives best in partial shade or shade, where its leaves won't be burned by the sharp midday sun. In gardens, it is valued for its cascading growth that resembles flowing water, thus bringing much-desired movement and lightness to static plantings under trees.
The Greenhills cultivar stands out with a fresh, bright green leaf color that literally lights up the darker areas under tree canopies. Unlike variegated varieties, it looks very natural and calm, creating a perfect background for other perennials. This long-lived grass does not spread by aggressive runners and keeps its compact clumping shape. Although it is not used much for cutting, it fulfills its ornamental function until late autumn, when the leaves turn warm beige and golden tones. We leave the dry clumps in the bed throughout the whole winter, when they are decorated with frost, and cut them back only in the spring.

Výběr stanoviště a příprava půdy
Rákosovka japonská Greenhills je pokladem pro stinné části zahrady, kde by se jiným okrasným travám nedařilo. Pro její výsadbu zvolte polostinné až stinné stanoviště, ideálně pod korunami stromů nebo na severní či východní straně domu. Přímé polední slunce by mohlo její jemné listy popálit. Půda by měla být kyprá, bohatá na humus a propustná. Pokud máte na zahradě těžkou jílovitou zeminu, je nutné ji vylehčit přimícháním kompostu nebo listovky, aby kořeny mohly dýchat a nestály ve vodě. Naopak v příliš písčité půdě by rostlina trpěla suchem.

Doporučený spon výsadby je 30–40 cm (přibližně 6 až 9 rostlin na metr čtvereční), což časem vytvoří souvislý, nádherně kaskádovitý porost. Po výsadbě je nezbytná pravidelná zálivka, dokud rostlina dobře nezakoření. Rákosovka má ráda vlhko, ale nesnáší přemokření. Půda by měla být stále mírně vlhká („fresh“).
Péče během roku a hnojení
Jedná se o nenáročnou trvalku, která netrpí na škůdce ani choroby. Během vegetační sezóny stačí hlídat vlhkost půdy, zejména v horkých letních dnech. Hnojení není nutné přehánět; stačí na jaře přidat k trsům trochu vyzrálého kompostu nebo použít pomalu rozpustné hnojivo pro okrasné trávy. Rákosovka roste trsovitě a nerozrůstá se agresivně do okolí, takže ji nemusíte omezovat zábranami. Díky své odolnosti a dlouhověkosti vydrží na jednom místě mnoho let bez nutnosti přesazování.
Zimování a jarní řez
I když listy na podzim zhnědnou a zaschnou, nikdy je nestříhejte před zimou. Suché trsy plní důležitou ochrannou funkci – chrání střed rostliny („srdíčko“) před mrazem a nadměrnou vlhkostí, která by mohla způsobit uhnívání. Navíc ojíněné trsy vypadají v zimní zahradě velmi efektně. Sestřih provádíme až brzy na jaře (obvykle v březnu), kdy celý trs seřízneme přibližně 5–10 cm nad zemí. Poté rostlina znovu obrazí svěžími zelenými listy.
Pěstování v nádobách
Rákosovka Greenhills je vynikající volbou i pro pěstování v květináčích a truhlících na stinných terasách či balkonech. Nádoba musí mít odtokové otvory a na dno je vhodné dát drenážní vrstvu z kamínků nebo keramzitu. Použijte kvalitní substrát pro trvalky smíchaný s trochou kompostu. U rostlin v nádobách je nutné dbát na častější zálivku, protože substrát vysychá rychleji než volná půda. Na zimu doporučujeme nádobu obalit jutou nebo polystyrenem a postavit ji na chráněné místo, aby kořenový bal nepromrzl, jelikož v nádobě je rostlina vůči mrazu citlivější než v záhonu.
