Betony, or Stachys, Hummelo is now an iconic perennial made famous by the renowned garden designer Piet Oudolf, after whose hometown it is named. This plant will win you over with its amazing ability to bring a firm structure and at the same time the wild beauty of a blooming meadow to the flowerbed. From a basal rosette of wrinkled, deep green leaves, upright, leafless stems topped with dense spikes of vibrant purplish-pink flowers emerge in June and July. Unlike many other perennials, the stems do not break or flop, so the plant looks neat and elegant even after heavy summer rain. In the garden, it works great in larger groups, where over time it creates a dense cover that gives weeds no chance and looks very natural.
It is literally a magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, who find a rich source of nectar on the deadnettle-like flowers. Thanks to its low-maintenance nature, it is an ideal choice even for beginner growers, because in our conditions it does not suffer from diseases or pests and reliably handles frosts down to -28 degrees. Pro úspěšné pěstování bukvice 'Hummelo' vyberte stanoviště na plném slunci nebo v mírném polostínu, kde se jí bude dařit nejlépe. Tato trvalka není náročná na typ půdy, ale vyhovuje jí především běžná zahradní zemina, která je hlinitá a dostatečně propustná. Je důležité, aby půda nebyla trvale zamokřená, protože v přemokřeném substrátu by kořeny mohly trpět, ale zároveň by neměla zcela vyschnout. Před výsadbou sazenice doporučujeme půdu vylepšit trochou vyzrálého kompostu, který dodá rostlině startovací živiny a zlepší strukturu zeminy.
Sazenice vysazujeme do připravených jamek tak, aby horní hrana kořenového balu byla v rovině s okolním terénem. Vzhledem k tomu, že bukvice 'Hummelo' vypadá nejlépe ve skupinách a časem vytváří zapojený porost, dodržujte doporučený spon přibližně 35 cm, což odpovídá hustotě 7 až 9 rostlin na metr čtvereční. Po výsadbě rostliny důkladně zalijte a v prvních týdnech, než plně zakoření, udržujte půdu mírně vlhkou. Jakmile se rostlina uchytí, je poměrně tolerantní a zvládne i kratší přísušky, i když pravidelná zálivka v horkých dnech podpoří bohatší olistění a kvetení.
Údržba této trvalky je velmi snadná a zvládne ji i naprostý začátečník, navíc rostlina netrpí na škůdce ani choroby. Pokud chcete podpořit vitalitu a prodloužit dobu kvetení, je vhodné průběžně odstraňovat odkvetlé stonky. Často se tak dočkáte opakovaného kvetení později v sezóně. Na podzim se listy mohou nechat na rostlině, protože bukvice má zajímavý zimní efekt a její pevné stonky se pod sněhem nelámou, čímž dodávají zahradě strukturu i v zimních měsících. Celý trs doporučujeme sestřihnout až brzy na jaře nízko nad zemí, aby uvolnil místo novým, svěžím výhonům. Díky plné mrazuvzdornosti až do -28 °C není potřeba žádná speciální zimní ochrana.
Pěstování v nádobách je také možné a velmi efektní. Pro tento účel zvolte dostatečně velký květináč s odtokovým otvorem na dně, aby přebytečná voda mohla odtékat. Na dno nádoby dejte vrstvu štěrku nebo keramzitu jako drenáž a použijte kvalitní substrát pro trvalky. Pamatujte, že rostliny v nádobách vysychají rychleji než ve volné půdě, proto je nutné je častěji zalévat, a to i během mírných zim, pokud nemrzne. V nádobě vynikne bukvice 'Hummelo' jako solitéra nebo v kombinaci s nižšími trávami.
