Ořechokřídlec Dark Knight vnáší do zahrady sytě modrou barvu právě ve chvíli, kdy většina letních trvalek pomalu odkvétá. Tento opadavý polokeř, vzniklý křížením druhů původem z východní Asie, miluje plné slunce a dobře propustnou, až písčitou půdu. Výborně snáší sucho a úpal, proto se hodí do štěrkových záhonů nebo na slunné svahy. Celá rostlina je silně aromatická a při promnutí listů uvolňuje kořenitou vůni připomínající pryskyřici a levanduli. Kultivar Dark Knight vyniká obzvláště tmavými, indigově fialovými květy, které vytvářejí nádherný kontrast se stříbřitě zelenými listy. Díky pozdní době kvetení v srpnu a září funguje jako významný magnet pro včely, čmeláky a motýly, kterým poskytuje cennou potravu před nadcházející zimou. Odkvetlá květenství je vhodné ponechat na rostlině přes zimu, nejen pro jejich okrasný efekt, ale i jako ochranu kořenů; zpětný řez provádíme až na jaře. Ořechokřídlec 'Dark Knight' je ideální rostlinou pro slunné a vyhřáté kouty zahrady, kde by jiné trvalky mohly trpět suchem. Aby vám tato sazenice dobře prosperovala, připravte jí stanoviště s velmi dobře propustnou půdou. Vlhkost a stagnující voda v zimě jsou pro ni větším nepřítelem než samotný mráz. Pokud zakládáte suchomilný záhon nebo skalku, je tento polokeř perfektní volbou. Zemina by měla být chudší, spíše písčitá či kamenitá; příliš humózní a hnojená půda by vedla k bujnému růstu listů na úkor kvetení a snížení mrazuvzdornosti. Během vegetace není nutné rostlinu přihnojovat, bohatě jí stačí běžné živiny obsažené v půdě.
Co se týče údržby, 'Dark Knight' je velmi nenáročný, pokud dodržíte pravidlo jarního řezu. Jelikož kvete na nových výhonech, které narostou během sezóny, provádíme zpětný řez zásadně až na jaře. Odstraňte všechny suché a poškozené části a loňské výhony zkraťte přibližně na třetinu nebo i níže. Tím zajistíte, že se keř zahustí a od srpna do září se obalí sytě modrými květy. Odkvetlá květenství nechte na rostlině přes celou zimu – nejenže vypadají dekorativně, když je pokryje jinovatka, ale také chrání rostlinu. Ačkoliv je mrazuvzdornost výborná (zóna 6a), zimní přemokření může být rizikové, proto je dobrá drenáž základem úspěchu.
Pěstování v nádobách je možné a velmi efektní, zvláště pokud máte jižně orientovaný balkon. Pro kontejnerovou výsadbu zvolte dostatečně velký květináč a nezapomeňte na to, že půda v nádobě vysychá a promrzá rychleji než na záhonu. V létě bude tedy nutná pravidelnější zálivka než ve volné půdě (ale stále platí: nepřelévat!), a na zimu je vhodné nádobu obalit jutou nebo ji umístit na chráněné místo u zdi domu, aby kořenový bal nepromrzl skrz naskrz.

Caryopteris clandonensis

Ořechokřídlec Hint of Gold rozzáří zahradu v době, kdy většina trvalek již odkvétá. Tento opadavý polokeř je ceněný především pro své netradiční zbarvení listů, které raší ve svítivě žlutých tónech a postupně přecházejí do jemné žlutozelené. Vytváří tak dokonalý a svěží kontrast k sytě modrofialovým květům, jež se na rostlině objevují od srpna až do října. Celá rostlina je silně aromatická a při doteku uvolňuje příjemnou kořenitou vůni, která připomíná směs bylinek, jehličí a pryskyřice. Díky svému kompaktnímu vzrůstu kolem 60 až 90 centimetrů se skvěle hodí do nižších keřových skupin nebo jako solitér do trvalkových záhonů, kde na sebe zaručeně strhne pozornost. Původní druhy ořechokřídleců pocházejí ze suchých a slunných stepních oblastí východní Asie, což předurčuje jejich nároky i v našich zahradách. Vyžadují plné slunce a velmi dobře propustnou, klidně i kamenitou či písčitou půdu, nesnáší totiž přemokření, zejména v zimních měsících. Hint of Gold je mrazuvzdorný, přesto je vhodné ho na zimu u kořenů mírně přikrýt chvojím. Na jaře je potřeba provést hlubší zpětný řez, který podpoří hustotu keře a bohatou násadu květů na nových výhonech. Květy jsou doslova magnetem pro včely, čmeláky a další opylovače, pro které představují cenný zdroj nektaru v pozdním létě. Větvičky lze použít i k řezu do vázy, kde svou vůní a netradiční barevnou kombinací listu a květu zpestří každou podzimní kytici.

Gaura is a clump-forming perennial native to Texas and Louisiana. Here, it behaves more like a short-lived perennial. It combines beautifully with grasses and adds lightness and airiness to flower beds. It is an excellent food source for insects. Tiny flowers resembling small butterflies bloom tirelessly from June until the first frosts. For bouquets, harvest as soon as the first two or three flowers open on the stem. Siskiyou Pink is a beautiful variety with pink-red flowers on slightly arching stems. It is less hardy than the white-flowering varieties. The red-spotted leaves are also interesting.

In flower beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, due to the identical flowering time, it is planted as a companion to roses. However, it will look just as good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It lasts 7 days in a vase. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.

Calamintha nepeta ssp. nepeta

An undemanding and modest perennial that blooms with a large number of tiny flowers. It blooms for a record-breaking length of time throughout late summer and autumn. It forms smaller, compact, airy bushes that release a minty-spicy scent. The thyme-like flowers attract bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. It will look good among roses as well as in naturalistic steppe beds, perhaps with lower grasses. This calamint is generally more vigorous. It differs from other calamints with felted leaves by its record flowering length, stiff and shiny leaves, and also a larger number of flowers that do not form seeds and are therefore maximally durable. Sometimes sold under the cultivar name 'Triumphator'.

Anemone hybrida

Anemones come from the same family as buttercups. With their elegant flowers on long slender stems, they can liven up and brighten late summer and autumn beds. They stand out against the darker background of shrub groups and will also be grateful for their partial shade. The Czech Perennial Association chose autumn Anemones as the perennial of the season for 2022. They last 7 days in a vase. Whirlwind is a historical variety bred in 1887 in the USA. It has a semi-double pure white flower, often with inner twisted petals, and compact, strictly upright growth. The flowers are very durable.

For Drying

Achillea filipendulina

Fernleaf Yarrow originates from the Caucasus and Central Asia. Unlike Common Yarrow, it grows in clumps and is also suitable for drying. Cutting back soon after flowering encourages re-blooming. However, if you decide to leave the spent stems in the beds, you gain a perfect structure that remains impressive long into winter. The leaves of this species emit a typical bitter Yarrow aroma. It lasts 10 days in a vase.
