Grape hyacinths thrive in well-drained soils, ideally with a sufficient amount of nutrients. Sunny beds or partial shade are suitable. They do not tolerate permanently waterlogged soil. Choose a location for them according to your options; they tolerate both sun and partial shade very well. The 'White Pearl' grape hyacinth is an undemanding perennial that is great for beginners. With its pure white and fragrant flowers, it will also attract the first pollinators to your spring garden. It thrives best in permeable, loamy, and humus-rich soil, where it will not suffer from excessive moisture that could lead to bulb rot. It looks great in the front parts of beds, in the lawn where it can freely naturalize, or even in containers on the terrace.
Planting the bulbs themselves takes place in the autumn, ideally in the months of September, October, and November. Before you plant the bulbs, keep them in a dry, cooler, and dark place so they do not start sprouting prematurely. Always plant them in the bed with the pointed end up at a depth of 8 to 10 centimeters. To create a rich and natural carpet, we recommend keeping a spacing of approximately 5 to 10 centimeters from each other, which corresponds to roughly 100 to 150 bulbs per square meter.
During the growing season, grape hyacinths require moderate and regular watering. The soil should be slightly moist, but once the plant retreats its leaves into the ground after flowering in the summer, it is better to significantly reduce watering so the bulbs can rest quietly in the ground. A huge advantage of this beautiful bulbous plant is its excellent health – the plant does not suffer from any common diseases, so it requires absolutely no chemical sprays. For the winter, you do not need to take the bulbs out of the ground or protect them in any laborious way. They are fully frost-hardy down to -34 °C, so they will safely overwinter in the soil and reliably wake up to life again in full beauty in the spring.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
