Some of them are an irresistible attraction for cats, caused by the hallucinogen nepetalactone. This should be present in the highest amount in the species Nepeta cataria. Conversely, lemon-scented catmints reportedly do not attract cats. The botanical name Nepeta likely comes from the name of the ancient Etruscan city Nepet - Nepi in the territory of today's Italian province of Viterbo, where the plant was once cultivated. Nepeta racemosa naturally grows on dry meadows and rocky, stony slopes from the Caucasus to Central Asia. It has aromatic grey-green leaves and forms a tufted semi-spherical bush. Walker’s Low got its name after an Irish estate where it was bred in 1970. It has the most intense blue-violet flower coloration.

Sazenici meduňky Limonii (Melissa officinalis) po vybalení vysazujte ideálně na plné slunce nebo do mírného polostínu, kde se plně rozvine její osvěžující citronové aroma s jasným nádechem limetky. Tato bylinka přirozeně pochází z teplého Středomoří, proto jí nejvíce vyhovuje dobře prohřáté stanoviště chráněné před prudkým větrem. Platí také osvědčené pravidlo, že meduňka bude vděčná za teplou, kyprou a na vápno bohatou půdu. Zemina by měla být především hlinitá, humózní a dostatečně propustná, aby se u kořenů nikdy nedržela přebytečná voda. Při výsadbě na záhon dodržujte doporučený spon přibližně 50 centimetrů od sebe. Tento dostatečný prostor zajistí správnou cirkulaci vzduchu mezi rostlinami, což je vždy velmi prospěšné pro jejich celkovou vitalitu a zdravý růst po celou sezónu.
Přestože je meduňka nenáročná trvalka, během sušších letních měsíců vyžaduje pravidelnou, ale vždy přiměřenou zálivku. Půdu se snažte udržovat mírně vlhkou, nikoliv však těžkou a přemokřenou. Rostlina se zároveň skvěle hodí i pro oblíbené pěstování v nádobách a truhlících na balkonech či terasách. Pro úspěšné pěstování v květináči doporučujeme dodržovat několik základních pravidel:
- Na dno vždy umístěte silnou drenážní vrstvu z kamínků nebo keramzitu, která spolehlivě zabrání uhnívání kořenů.
- V nádobách zemina vysychá o poznání rychleji, proto vlhkost substrátu pravidelně kontrolujte.
- K přihnojování vám bohatě postačí kvalitní kompost zapracovaný do půdy brzy na jaře, případně mírná dávka přírodního organického hnojiva. Jelikož jde o užitečnou bylinku s jedlými listy určenými ke konzumaci, rozhodně se vyhněte jakýmkoliv zbytečným chemickým přípravkům a postřikům.
Kultivar Limonii je mimořádně odolný, během pěstování netrpí na žádné běžné choroby a přirozeně se mu vyhýbají i škůdci, což z něj dělá ideální volbu pro úplné začátečníky. Nejintenzivnější chuť získáte, pokud budete aromatické zelené lístky sklízet těsně před rozkvětem. Během léta rostlina vykvétá drobnými bílými květy, které fungují jako obrovské lákadlo pro včely, čmeláky a další užitečné opylovače. Intenzivní řez po odkvětu podporuje nový růst a zabraňuje samovýsevu. Zpětným řezem navíc krásně udržíte rostlinu v kompaktním tvaru kolem 20 až 40 centimetrů. S příchodem zimy se vůbec nemusíte obávat, protože meduňka je plně mrazuvzdorná až do úctyhodných -34 °C. Na podzim stačí odumírající nadzemní část zkrátit a kořeny nechat v klidu přezimovat venku do dalšího jara.
