Barrenwort Akebono is a true jewel for the shady corners of your garden. These plants naturally grow in the undergrowth of light Asian forests, where they thrive in humous and well-drained soil. This is exactly what makes them an ideal choice for planting under trees or shrubs, where they will form a dense and decorative carpet. The Akebono cultivar will delight you in spring, typically in April and May, with delicate flowers in lilac to light purple shades that give a very fragile and elegant impression. Also interesting is the variability of the leaves, which can emerge with a bronze tinge and turn green later. Even though it looks fragile, it is a very hardy and long-lived perennial that easily handles frosts down to -29 °C. The flowers can also be used for cutting into smaller spring arrangements, where they add lightness to the composition. However, it should be kept in mind that the entire plant is poisonous.

Škornice Akebono je skutečným pokladem pro stinná zákoutí zahrady, kde se jí nejlépe daří v humózní a mírně vlhké půdě. Při výsadbě této trvalky myslete na to, že nemá ráda těžké jílovité půdy, ve kterých by mohla trpět přemokřením. Pokud máte na zahradě těžší zeminu, vylehčete ji přídavkem písku a velkorysým množstvím kompostu. Vzhledem k tomu, že obdržíte již zakořeněnou sazenici, můžete ji vysazovat prakticky kdykoliv během vegetační sezóny, pokud není půda zamrzlá. Jámu pro výsadbu připravte o něco větší, než je kořenový bal, a rostlinu zasaďte tak, aby nebyla utopena příliš hluboko, ale ani nevyčnívala nad povrch.
Jedná se o dlouhověkou trvalku, která na jednom místě vydrží mnoho let bez nutnosti přesazování. Její velkou předností je vysoká mrazuvzdornost (zóna 5a), takže naši zimu zvládá bez problémů a nevyžaduje speciální zimní ochranu, snad jen s výjimkou první zimy po výsadbě, kdy můžete okolí rostliny lehce přikrýt chvojím. Klíčovým momentem údržby je předjaří – v tuto dobu je vhodné odstranit všechny loňské listy. Tento radikální řez zajistí, že něžné jarní květy v dubnu a květnu budou mít dostatek prostoru a světla a nebudou se ztrácet v loňské zeleni. Nové listy, které vyraší po odkvětu, budou navíc zdravé a krásně vybarvené.
Pokud uvažujete o pěstování v nádobě, škornice je pro tento účel velmi vhodná, zejména díky svému kompaktnímu vzrůstu do 35 cm. Vyberte pro ni nádobu s odtokovým otvorem a umístěte ji do stínu nebo polostínu – na přímém slunci by se jí v květináči přehřívaly kořeny a listy by se mohly popálit. Substrát v nádobě udržujte stále mírně vlhký. Ačkoliv je rostlina velmi zdravá a netrpí běžnými chorobami, občas ji mohou navštívit lalokonosci. Pokud na listech objevíte typické výkroje, zkontrolujte rostlinu, ideálně večer, kdy jsou tito škůdci aktivní. Na závěr je dobré připomenout, že rostlina je jedovatá, což ji sice chrání před okusem zvěří, ale vyžaduje opatrnost, pokud se na zahradě pohybují malé děti.

The Czech Perennial Association chose autumn Anemones as the perennial of the season for 2022. They last 7 days in a vase. Whirlwind is a historical variety bred in 1887 in the USA. It has a semi-double pure white flower, often with inner twisted petals, and compact, strictly upright growth. The flowers are very durable.
