Growing the Marie Jo tulip is a joy for everyone, including absolute beginners. You can either plant the bulbs immediately or store them for a short time in a cool, dry, and dark place. The ideal time for planting in a flowerbed is during the autumn months, specifically from September to November, when the soil is no longer overheated by the summer sun. For successful growth, choose a location in sun or partial shade. Well-drained, humus-rich soil is very important. Tulips do not tolerate waterlogging, so ensure that there is no standing water where you plant them, otherwise the bulbs could start to rot.
Planting itself is very simple. Plant the bulbs 10 to 15 centimeters deep with the pointed end facing up. To highlight the beauty of the bright yellow flowers with lemon shades, we recommend group planting. Maintain a spacing of about 10 to 15 centimeters between individual bulbs. If you are planning a large-scale planting, count on 60 to 100 bulbs per square meter. Keep watering only moderate. The plant likes medium humidity, so water only during periods when it is dry for a longer time. During the spring months, when the tulip grows to a height of 30 to 45 centimeters, it does not need any special support or pinching. The sturdy stems hold the flowers easily even in rainier weather. Furthermore, this cultivar is absolutely fantastic for cutting. If you want to bring the delicate scent of spring home, cut the flowers early in the morning. And how to take care of the plant after it finishes blooming in April or May? You can carefully remove the spent heads so the plant does not exhaust itself producing seeds. However, leave the leaves on the bed to yellow and wither naturally. The bulb draws back all the necessary nutrients from them for the next season.
Overwintering the Marie Jo tulip requires no effort on your part at all. It is a short-lived perennial with extreme frost resistance that can easily withstand temperatures dropping to an incredible -40 °C. Therefore, leave the bulbs in the ground over the winter without worry; the frost will not harm them, on the contrary, it helps them pass through the necessary period of cold.
