Cimicifuga japonica

Bugbane Silver Dance

Japanese bugbane brings freshness to the shady corners of the garden. In its homeland, it grows in the shady mountain valleys of Japan, which is why it is best suited to partial shade to full shade and moister, loamy, humous soil here. From the mature potted seedling you receive, a reliable and long-lived perennial will grow, which even beginners can handle. It does not require complex care, does not suffer from diseases or pests, and can withstand even severe frosts down to minus twenty-eight degrees. However, the entire plant is poisonous. It decorates flowerbeds not only with white flowers but also with striking dark green leaves. In spring, it needs plenty of space and time to sprout. Ideally, you can combine it with early bulbs that will fill the empty space. From August to September, it creates upright inflorescences full of tiny flowers, which are excellent for cutting into late summer bouquets. The 'Silver Dance' cultivar grows to a height of eighty centimeters, stands out with its compact growth, and blooms truly very long and tirelessly. Show full description

Filipendula hybridum

Fluffy deep pink clouds of flowers are the main distinguishing feature of this meadowsweet. The 'Kahome' cultivar is a compact perennial reaching a height of around 40 to 50 centimeters, making it a great addition to the foreground of damper flowerbeds. The entire plant, including the dark green leaves, smells pleasant, and the flowers also spread an irresistible honey aroma around them. It is a rewarding and low-maintenance plant suitable even for beginners, you just need to keep in mind that it requires plenty of moisture for its happy growth. It is perfectly suited for waterlogged parts of gardens and the edges of ponds, where it naturally thrives. You can also use the inflorescences in summer bouquets; they will stay fresh in a vase for about seven days.

Baptisia australis

Baptisia comes from North America, belongs to the legume family, and resembles lupine in appearance. Unlike lupine, however, it does not suffer from fungal diseases and does not taste as good to slugs. Besides the blue flowers, the large pods that adorn the plant long after flowering are interesting. North American Indians used Baptisia roots to disinfect wounds and lower fever, and leaves to dye fabrics. With Baptisia, patience is most important; it takes some time to fully establish and create a massive root system adapted to survive long periods of drought and fire. Then it is very long-lived. It was chosen as the Perennial of the Year for the 2019 season.

Catananche caerulea

Catananche caerulea, commonly known as Cupid's dart, is a charming plant that will win you over with its lightness and airiness. Its scientific name refers to ancient Greek legends, according to which it was used in love potions; today, however, you will appreciate it more for its undemanding nature and unique appearance. It is excellently suited for natural-style gardens, gravel beds, and drought-tolerant plantings, where it beautifully complements other perennials or ornamental grasses. It grows up to ninety centimeters tall and, despite its height, needs no support. The flowers have a lavender-blue color with a darker center and toothed petals at the ends. They bloom gradually from June to September. Cupid's dart loves drought and heat, but on the contrary, it cannot stand winter dampness, which harms it more than frost. If you provide it with a well-drained spot, it will survive temperatures down to -18 °C. It is a rewarding plant for beginner growers and experienced florists alike. Fresh flowers last a week in a vase, but they will bring you the most joy when dried. Harvest them fully open in dry weather and hang them upside down. They will keep their shape and remind you of summer all winter long.

Helleborus orientalis

Hellebores are evergreen perennials that form slowly spreading clumps of leathery, dark green leaves. The stems usually carry four to five flowers. They bloom very early, as early as late winter and early spring. They can be used in a vase only after conspicuous seed pods form in the center of the flower and the flower matures. Picked earlier, they tend to wilt and the stems cannot hold the flower upright. All parts of the plant are poisonous. The semi-double flowers of the Double Ellen Picotee hellebore take on white and light pink hues with a purplish-burgundy edging.

Phlomis tuberosa

Phlomis tuberosa, known in Czech as tuberous Jerusalem sage, brings an unmistakable silhouette to perennial plantings. This robust plant, originally from the European steppes, is perfectly suited for lovers of natural gardens looking for something novel. Its dark purple stems form an interesting contrast to the light pinkish-lilac flowers, which are arranged in regular whorls one above the other. This tiered structure appears very decorative and looks interesting in the bed, especially in combination with finer plants. For florists, Phlomis is a literal treasure. You can cut it for fresh summer bouquets, but its true moment comes when dried. The faded seed pods hold their shape perfectly and will continue to look spectacular in a vase all winter. If you leave it in the bed, it will provide a beautiful spectacle even in the months when the garden is sleeping. It is a completely undemanding and frost-resistant perennial that loves the sun and well-drained soil. In nature here, it belongs to the critically endangered species, so growing it in the garden is also a small contribution to the protection of biodiversity.

Brunnera macrophylla

The largeleaf brunnera comes from the moist mountain forests of the Caucasus, where it forms dense undergrowth. It is an ideal perennial for shady and semi-shady corners of your garden, where it will thrive in humus-rich, moist soil. It resembles classic forget-me-nots in appearance, but don't be fooled, its leaves are much larger, heart-shaped, and rough to the touch. Thanks to them, it acts as a great groundcover plant that sprouts early in the spring and reliably covers bare soil with its leaves until late autumn. It thus forms a natural contrasting background for the delicate, tiny flowers. Tiny sky-blue flowers appear in April, May, and June, creating a beautiful delicate veil over the green carpet of leaves. The flower clusters are also suitable for cutting into spring hand-tied bouquets, where they look very tender. Just watch out for snails and slugs, who like to feast on the juicy leaves of the brunnera, so it's a good idea to check the plants regularly. It is a long-lived and hardy perennial that handles severe frosts without problems and will bring you joy in one place for many years.

Dicentra spectabilis Alba

The original home of bleeding hearts is Korea and China, where they grow in light deciduous forests. They are classic garden perennials. They will look perfect in nostalgically styled flower beds; the white variant fits well even into naturalistic woodland gardens. They are popular for their heart-shaped flowers hanging on horizontal or arching stems. These weaken and die back some time after flowering; all the plant's energy then concentrates in the roots, and at that moment, we can cut the above-ground part back completely. For the rest of the year, we won't even know the bleeding heart is in the garden. It will remind us of its charm again in the spring. Perfect vase life, at least 7 days. Harvest when the first 3–4 flowers open on the stem. Alba has beautiful pure white flowers; the shoots sprouting in spring are light lime green.

Aquilegia vulgaris

The common columbine is a versatile perennial that will reliably inhabit both rural and modern flowerbeds. In the wild, it grows on the edges of forests and in light groves across all of Europe, which is why it thrives best in the garden in full sun to partial shade and ordinary loamy soil rich in humus. Its main charm lies in its unusually shaped flowers, but it is also valuable for its very early sprouting green leaves, which awaken the garden after winter. You will receive a beautifully grown seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant to your chosen spot. Although the plant is poisonous, it represents a huge asset for gardeners. Even complete beginners can manage growing it, pests avoid it, and it easily survives severe frosts dropping to minus thirty-four degrees. During May and June, delicate flowers bloom on sturdy, sixty to eighty-centimeter-tall stems, bringing typical airiness and lightness to the planting. The 'Kristall' cultivar is a large-flowered variety that stands out with pure white flowers and prominent spurs. These act as a reliable magnet for bees, bumblebees, and other beneficial pollinators. Keep in mind that in a favorable location, columbine very willingly self-seeds, taking care of natural-looking wild stands. It works well in perennial beds and as an undergrowth beneath taller shrubs. If you like bringing a piece of the garden home, columbine certainly won't disappoint you. It is perfectly suited for cutting and will bring a novel structure to spring bouquets. Fresh flowers will bring you joy in a vase for about seven days. If you leave some of the flowers to finish blooming on the flowerbed, they will form interesting seed pods, which are highly popular among florists for creating various natural decorations and can also be dried well. Just watch out for the occasional occurrence of powdery mildew during the drier months, but otherwise, the plant needs almost no care.

In nature, it grows in damp meadows or light forests, so it will thrive best for you in partial shade and in loamy, humous soil with plenty of moisture. It forms compact clumps and from June to September shoots up sturdy, upright stems that do not need support. Alchemilla mollis

Alchemilla mollis, known as lady's mantle, is an indispensable perennial for anyone who wants to bring harmony and softness to the garden. Its home is the moister environments of mountain meadows and light forests, making it a very adaptable plant that will survive even severe frosts without problems in our climate. The 'Irish Silk' cultivar is prized for its vitality and abundant blooming, where clouds of tiny, yellow-green flowers float above clumps of gray-green leaves. It is precisely this neutral color that can work wonders in a flower bed – it softens overly sharp contrasts between other flowers and beautifully unifies the entire composition. Besides its ornamental function, lady's mantle also has practical uses. Thanks to its clumping growth and ability to quickly fill in, it is ideal for edging pathways or as an underplanting beneath taller shrubs and roses. Water droplets catch on its leaves, creating a magical spectacle in the garden. If you enjoy making bouquets, you will love lady's mantle as versatile filler greenery that matches almost anything. It will last beautiful for about ten days in a vase, and its inflorescences can also be easily dried without losing too much of their color or shape. Moreover, it is a magnet for pollinators, and its young leaves are even edible, so it also finds use in a natural kitchen.

Eryngium planum

Sea holly is an indispensable perennial for all lovers of naturally styled gardens. It earned its folk name - male fidelity - in times when it was used in herbal medicine as an aphrodisiac, and its roots were even candied as sweets in France and England. Today, however, you will appreciate it mainly for its low maintenance and unique appearance. Its home is on sunny hillsides and dry meadows, so even in our gardens, it will welcome well-drained, even poorer sandy soil and full sun. It produces upright, sturdy stems topped with blue-purple flowers with prickly bracts, which bring interesting structure and a silvery touch to the flowerbeds. It is literally a magnetic plant for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, who find a rich food source on it. Floristically, it is extremely valuable, because its flowers are perfectly suited for cutting as well as drying for winter decorations. If you decide not to harvest it, feel free to leave it in the flowerbed all winter. Its silhouette covered in hoarfrost creates a wonderful winter effect. Although it is a short-lived perennial, in a suitable location it reliably self-seeds, so you will enjoy its beauty for many years.

Filipendula vulgaris

Dropwort is our native drought-tolerant perennial that, thanks to its tuberously thickened roots, easily copes with even very dry locations. In nature, you will find it on sunlit slopes and dry meadows, making it an ideal choice for gravel beds or natural-style gardens where you don't have to worry too much about watering. It forms basal rosettes of finely divided, fern-like leaves, from which stems carrying rich inflorescences emerge in June and July. Floristically valuable are its fragrant milky white to creamy inflorescences, which attract a large number of bees and other insects. The flowers have a pleasant scent and stay fresh in a vase for about a week. The buds themselves are already highly decorative, looking like tiny pearls before blooming, and they also put on a great show after flowering when they turn into small stars. Clematis heracleifolia

Clematis 'Mrs R. Brydon' is an unusual and very resilient perennial that brings softness and color to the garden just as summer transitions into autumn. The original species comes from the shrubby and forest edges of East Asia, which is why a location in the sun or partial shade suits it well here too. It will thrive in loamy and humus-rich soil with regular watering. An interesting feature of this clematis is its variable growth. If you provide it with support in the form of a fence or trellis, it will willingly climb up to a height of two and a half meters. However, if you leave it to grow freely without support, it grows like a carpet and forms a dense shrub. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which you can simply transplant straight into the garden. Care is easy, it doesn't suffer from diseases or pests, and even beginners can easily manage it. During August and September, it gets covered in an abundance of flowers in a gorgeous lavender-blue shade, which react to the ambient temperature and can interestingly fade or darken. The flowers reliably attract bees and are suitable for cutting into bouquets. When handling, remember that the plant is poisonous.

Cultivation

Ty brzy zjara zaplní prázdné místo, a jakmile v létě zatáhnou, ploštičník prostor opět elegantně zakryje svými výraznými tmavě zelenými listy.
Při samotné výsadbě na záhon dodržujte spon zhruba 45 centimetrů, což odpovídá přibližně čtyřem až šesti rostlinám na jeden metr čtvereční. Ploštičník kultivaru Silver Dance dorůstá do výšky kolem osmdesáti centimetrů a vyžaduje dostatek životního prostoru, aby kolem jeho trsů mohl dobře proudit vzduch.

Actaea simplex

Bugbane 'Black Negligee' is a charming and very long-lived perennial that will bring an interesting play of colors and textures to the shady corners of the garden. In its original homeland, it grows on the edges of forests and in the undergrowth of East Asia, so it thrives best in partial to full shade and in moist, loamy soil rich in humus. From the delivered grown seedling in a pot, after transplanting to a flower bed, a robust plant reaching well over a meter in height will grow. It captivates mainly with its striking dark brownish-burgundy leaves, which form a perfect contrast for other shade-loving species. In spring, bugbane needs plenty of time to sprout into its full beauty, so we recommend combining it with spring bulbs such as snowdrops or daffodils. From August to September, tall stems with clusters of tiny white flowers grow from the dark clumps, which smell pleasantly and reliably attract bees and other pollinators. It is an undemanding plant for beginners, which does not suffer from diseases or pests and easily handles severe frosts. The inflorescences are perfect for cutting into bouquets, where their fine texture stands out. Just remember that the entire plant is poisonous.

Actaea simplex

Bugbane 'Pink Spike' is a long-lived perennial that will bring elegance and a delicate fragrance to the shady corners of the garden. It originally comes from the moist forests of East Asia, so it thrives best in partial shade or shade here. For its satisfaction, it needs humous and well-drained soil that retains enough moisture. Especially in summer, it will appreciate regular watering. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which just needs to be transplanted straight into the flower bed. There it will soon form a massive clump reaching a height of up to one hundred and eighty centimeters. Despite this height, it has sturdy stems and does not need any support. The 'Pink Spike' cultivar stands out primarily for its deeply lobed leaves, which play with dark shades of burgundy, purple, and bronze. While most of the garden slowly loses its breath at the end of summer, bugbane is just showing its best from August to October. Towering above the dark leaves are long inflorescences composed of tiny white and light pink flowers. These brush-like inflorescences also smell pleasant and act as a reliable magnet for bees and other pollinators. It is a completely undemanding plant that easily handles even bitter frosts dropping to minus thirty-four degrees. Common diseases naturally avoid it and it does not suffer from pests. However, the entire plant is poisonous, which must be kept in mind when choosing a location. After blooming, bugbane does not wilt out of sight but retains its interesting structure. If you leave the dried stems on the flower bed, they will provide a beautiful spectacle even during the winter months under a layer of snow. In garden composition, bugbane acts as a dominant feature of shady parts. It is mostly planted at one to three plants per square meter, roughly sixty to eighty centimeters apart. The long and straight inflorescences can be very well used for cutting into fresh bouquets. Conversely, it is not suitable for drying into permanent decorations because the flowers lose their shape. As a long-lived perennial, 'Pink Spike' will settle permanently in the right place and bring you joy for many years without spreading by self-seeding to the surroundings.

Gaura lindheimeri

Gaura Siskiyou Pink is a charming perennial that brings lightness and airiness to the garden. Its original native area is in the warm regions of Texas and Louisiana, which is why it thrives in full sun and well-drained sandy soil. It grows in clumps and from June until the autumn frosts produces tiny raspberry-pink flowers that resemble fluttering butterflies. An interesting detail of this variety is the green leaves with a bronze tint and red spots. It is an absolutely undemanding plant, does not suffer from diseases or pests, and even beginners can handle its care. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which you simply need to transplant directly into the flowerbed. Although it grows more as a short-lived perennial in our climate, in a suitable place it reliably self-seeds. Occasional pinching will encourage richer branching.

Echinacea pallida

During June and July, it will reward you with aromatic flowers with unusually narrow and drooping petals in light purple and pink tones. The prominent prickly centers are literally a magnet for bees and bumblebees, and the flowers themselves are surprisingly edible. The plant stands out especially in rustic plantings together with ornamental grasses. Gardeners and florists love it for its versatility. The fresh stems bring joy in a vase for about a week.
