Záplevák Rubinzwerg vnese do vašich pozdně letních záhonů hřejivé tóny babího léta a neopakovatelnou atmosféru severoamerických prérií, odkud tento druh původně pochází. Divoce rostou zápleváky na vlhkých loukách, proto i v zahradě ocení humózní půdu, která nevysychá, a stanoviště na plném slunci. Zahradní kultivar Rubinzwerg je ceněný pro svou kompaktnější výšku a především sytě rubínovou až vínovou barvu květů, které mají pro zápleváky typický vypouklý střed a mírně svěšené okvětní plátky připomínající sukénku. V trvalkových výsadbách působí velmi dynamicky a skvěle doplňuje okrasné trávy nebo jiné slunomilné trvalky kvetoucí na podzim. Květy jsou magnetem pro včely a další opylovače, kteří na nich nacházejí potravu v době, kdy už mnoho jiných rostlin odkvétá. Pevné stonky navíc předurčují záplevák k řezu do vázy, kde vydrží dělat parádu poměrně dlouho. Rostlina je plně mrazuvzdorná a dlouhověká, jen je třeba myslet na to, že je mírně jedovatá a neměla by se konzumovat.

Záplevák 'Rubinzwerg' je vděčná trvalka, která do zahrady vnese ohnivé barvy, ale aby vám dělala radost dlouhá léta, je třeba respektovat její nároky na vláhu. Zápleváku se nebude dařit na suchých, písčitých místech bez zálivky. Vyberte pro ni stanoviště na plném slunci, kde bude mít k dispozici živnou, humózní a především nevysychavou půdu. Pokud máte na zahradě těžší jílovitou půdu, vylehčete ji kompostem, aby byla propustná, ale stále držela vlhkost. Nedostatek vody se projeví vadnutím a zasycháním listů odspodu, což rostlině ubírá na kráse.
Při výsadbě zakoupených sazenic dodržujte doporučený spon 40–50 cm. Rostliny se časem rozrostou do šířky a vytvoří husté trsy, které plevelům nedají šanci. 'Rubinzwerg' je ceněný pro svou stabilitu, takže se nemusíte bát, že by se po prvním dešti povalil, opora většinou není nutná. Květy se objevují od července až do září a jejich sytě vínová barva s typickým vypouklým středem láká včely a další opylovače. Pokud chcete kvetení co nejvíce prodloužit, nenechávejte rostlinu vysilovat tvorbou semen a odkvetlé květy průběžně odstřihávejte. Díky tomu bude záplevák neustále nasazovat na nová poupata a zdobit záhon až do příchodu prvních mrazíků.
Zdravotní stav zápleváku je obecně vynikající, netrpí na padlí ani jiné běžné choroby trvalek. Jediným významným nepřítelem jsou slimáci, kteří dokáží na jaře zlikvidovat čerstvě rašící výhonky. Zejména u mladých výsadeb kontrolujte okolí rostlin a používejte mechanické zábrany nebo ekologické přípravky proti plžům. Rostlina obsahuje látky, které jsou mírně jedovaté, což ji sice chrání před okusem zvěří, ale vy byste na to měli pamatovat, pokud se na zahradě pohybují malé děti. Rostlina není určena ke konzumaci. Teprve v předjaří odstraňte celou nadzemní část řezem těsně nad zemí.
Pěstování v nádobách je u tohoto kultivaru možné a díky jeho výšce kolem jednoho metru vytvoří v kontejneru dominantní prvek terasy či balkonu. Pro úspěch je však nutné použít velkou nádobu (min. 10–15 litrů), na dno dát drenážní vrstvu štěrku a použít kvalitní substrát pro balkonové rostliny, který dobře drží vodu. V nádobě je rostlina zcela závislá na vaší péči – nesmí přeschnout! V zimě je kořenový bal v květináči náchylnější na promrznutí než ve volné půdě, i když je rostlina v zemi plně mrazuvzdorná. Proto květináč na zimu obalte jutou nebo polystyrenem a postavte ho na chráněné místo.

Jde o mimořádně mrazuvzdornou rostlinu, která bez problémů snese i drsné zimy, takže se o ni nemusíte bát ani v chladnějších oblastech. Mohutné trsy s tmavě zelenými listy dorůstají do výšky kolem jednoho metru a nepotřebují žádnou oporu. Od července až do září se na pevných stoncích otevírají záplavy květů. Odrůda Septembergold vyniká nádherným zlatavě žlutým odstínem, který do záhonů vnese hřejivou atmosféru. Tyto květy jsou doslova magnetem pro včely, čmeláky a další opylovače. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.
