Growing these beautiful parrot-type tulips is surprisingly easy, and even a complete beginner can handle it with ease. Choose a sunny location or light partial shade for planting the bulbs. They will thrive best in loamy, humus-rich, and, above all, well-draining soil so that the bulbs do not rot in damp conditions. If you are not going to plant the bulbs immediately after receiving them, store them in a dry, cool, and dark place. The ideal time for planting occurs in the autumn, specifically from September to November, when the soil is not yet frozen and the bulbs have enough time to root before winter arrives.
Plant the bulbs with the tip facing up at a depth of 10 to 15 cm. To achieve a rich effect, we recommend maintaining a spacing of 10 to 15 cm as well, which corresponds to roughly 50 to 70 bulbs per square meter. These tulips do not require any special winter protection; they are fully frost-hardy down to an impressive -40 °C, so they will survive even the harshest frosts deep in the soil without any problems. During the vegetation period in the spring, maintain moderate but regular watering. Be careful of waterlogging, which could lead to gray mold.
In April and May, you can look forward to flowers that reach a height of 45 to 55 cm and will reliably attract useful pollinators to your garden. After flowering, it is key not to remove the green leaves too soon. Let them naturally turn yellow and dry out, as the bulb draws nutrients from them for the next season. The flowers are fantastic for cutting for vases, where their twisted petals stand out best. Check the plants occasionally to prevent mosaic virus or the aforementioned rot, and remove any affected specimens at the first signs.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
