The double-flowering Akebono tulip brings a very striking yellow color with a delicate red edge to the spring garden and, in its full beauty, reaches a height of 30 to 45 centimeters. Growing it is so hassle-free that even complete gardening beginners can handle it without difficulty. The absolute basis for success is choosing the right spot, ideally in full sun or light shade, and ensuring sufficiently permeable soil. We supply the bulbs of this variety in the largest available size (12/+), which guarantees you exceptionally strong plants and superiorly rich flowering. The actual planting ideally takes place from the beginning of September until the end of November. We plant the bulbs 10 to 15 centimeters deep and leave the exact same spacing between them. Before planting, do not forget to store them in complete dryness and cold to prevent them from weakening.
During the growing season, the plant mostly manages just fine with normal rainfall. Waterlogged soil is highly dangerous for all bulbous plants, so provide them with extra water only during periods of really long and intense drought. This particular tulip is highly resistant to frost; it belongs to the very cold zone 3a and can withstand temperatures dropping to an incredible -40 °C. This eliminates almost any worry about autumn winterization. As soon as the plant finishes flowering in April or May, cut off only the forming seed pod so that the bulb does not exhaust itself by producing seeds. However, leave the green leaves in the bed until they dry out completely on their own; in this way, the bulb creates important energy reserves for the next year. It is a variety excellent for cutting, so you can happily take the vibrant flowers home, where they remain fresh in a vase for a really long time.
When planning the overall planting, always keep in mind that these bulbous plants are a great treat for field voles. If you are bothered by these small rodents in your garden, it is definitely worth protecting the growing area with special planting baskets, which are simply sunk directly into the ground. In terms of diseases, pay attention to thorough prevention, especially against gray mold and the dangerous mosaic virus. The best possible defensive measure against rot is not to overwater the beds unnecessarily and to grow plants in high-quality, loose soil. Although the Akebono tulip does not have any specific scent and its flowers do not attract pollinators at all, its main strength lies in the extraordinary visual effect it brings to your spring beds.
