Succisa pratensis

Devil's-bit scabious

A beautiful and delicate perennial growing wild in wet meadows and pastures. In summer, it blooms with magical spherical flowers of blue-violet color. It attracts bees, hoverflies, and rare butterfly species. Its peculiar name is tied to a legend according to which the devil, in anger over the protective power of this herb, bit off its rhizome. The rhizomes indeed have a peculiar shape, and the naming in connection with the devil appears in other European languages as well. Show full description

Helleborus orientalis

Hellebores are evergreen perennials that form slowly spreading clumps of leathery, dark green leaves. Stems usually bear four to five flowers. They bloom very early, as early as late winter and early spring. They are usable for vases only after conspicuous seed pods form in the center of the flower and the flower matures. Before that, they tend to wilt and the stems cannot hold the flower in an upright position. All parts of the plant are poisonous. Hellebore Pretty Ellen Spotted is a beautiful variety with simple white flowers with wine-red spotting. The center with creamy stamens is further highlighted by lime yellow-green coloration.

Dianthus cruentus

Hvozdík krvavý vnáší do zahrad to pravé luční kouzlo.

Baptisia Decadence

Baptisia originates from North America, belongs to the legume family, and resembles the lupine in appearance. Unlike it, however, it does not suffer from fungal diseases and does not taste as good to slugs. Besides the blue flowers, the large pods are interesting, decorating the plant long after flowering. North American Indians used Baptisia roots to disinfect wounds and lower fever, and leaves to dye fabrics. Patience is most important with Baptisia; it takes some time to fully establish and create a massive root system adapted for surviving long periods of drought and fires. Then it is very long-lived.

For Drying

Achillea filipendulina

Fernleaf Yarrow originates from the Caucasus and Central Asia. Unlike Common Yarrow, it grows in clumps and is also suitable for drying. Cutting back soon after flowering encourages re-blooming. However, if you decide to leave the spent stems in the beds, you gain a perfect structure that remains impressive long into winter. The leaves of this species emit a typical bitter Yarrow aroma. It lasts 10 days in a vase.
