Growing betony 'Superba' is a joy even for complete beginners thanks to its resilience and adaptability. Plant the seedlings you receive from us in a sunny spot or partial shade. Although it is a very tolerant plant, it will thrive best in regular garden soil that is loamy, permeable, and rich in humus. Just avoid areas where water sits for long periods to prevent root rot. When planting, maintain a spacing of approximately 40 cm (about 7 to 9 plants per square meter), which provides the plants with enough space for healthy development while also allowing them to eventually merge into a beautiful, dense cover that naturally suppresses weed growth.
Regarding watering and care during the season, betony appreciates slightly moist soil. Watering is especially important in the first few weeks after planting until the seedlings are well-rooted, and then during hot summer days when the soil should not dry out completely. A great advantage of this cultivar is its health – the plant does not suffer from diseases and is even usually ignored by common pests like slugs, so you can do without chemical protection. If you want to support the plant's vitality and prolong the period it decorates your garden, regularly remove faded stems. This simple action often stimulates the plant to repeat flowering later in the summer.
Betony 'Superba' is a fully hardy perennial (down to -28 °C) that winters here without any problems, without the need for any winter protection or mulching. It is a long-lived plant that can remain in one spot for many years.
