Zběhovec Catlin's Giant
Zběhovec Catlin's Giant je skutečným obrem mezi půdopokryvnými trvalkami a výbornou volbou pro stinná zákoutí. Původní botanický druh najdeme v podrostu listnatých lesů a na vlhčích loukách Evropy, proto i v zahradě miluje polostinná stanoviště s humózní a hlinitou půdou, která nevysychá. Tento kultivar vyniká nezvykle velkými, lesklými listy v bronzových až vínově hnědých odstínech, které spolehlivě zapojí plochu a nedají šanci plevelům. Od dubna do června nad tmavými listy vykvétají výrazná, až 30 cm vysoká modrofialová květenství, která jsou cenným zdrojem nektaru pro včely a další opylovače. Ačkoliv se nehodí k řezu do vázy, na záhoně plní svou funkci dokonale. Je plně mrazuvzdorný a nevyžaduje téměř žádnou péči, což z něj dělá ideální rostlinu i pro začínající zahradníky, kteří chtějí rychle zazelenit prázdná místa pod stromy či keři.

Úspěšné pěstování zběhovce 'Catlin's Giant' začíná výběrem správného stanoviště. Této rostlině se nejlépe daří v polostínu až stínu, kde její výrazné bronzově vínové listy netrpí úžehem od poledního slunce. Je to ideální rostlina do podrostu pod stromy nebo keře, kde jiné trvalky často selhávají kvůli nedostatku světla. Půda by měla být ideálně hlinitá a humózní, s dobrou schopností zadržovat vláhu, ale zároveň dostatečně propustná, aby kořeny nestály trvale ve vodě. Před výsadbou sazenic doporučujeme půdu vylepšit kompostem, který dodá potřebné živiny a zlepší strukturu zeminy.
Sazenice vysazujte do sponu 30 až 40 cm, což odpovídá zhruba 7 až 9 rostlinám na metr čtvereční. I když se to může zdát jako velká vzdálenost, zběhovec se díky svým nadzemním výhonům poměrně rychle rozrůstá a brzy vytvoří hustý koberec, který nedá šanci plevelům. Po výsadbě je nutná důkladná zálivka, dokud rostliny plně nezakoření. V průběhu sezóny pak dbáme na to, aby půda zcela nevyschla, zběhovec má rád stálou mírnou vlhkost (označovanou jako 💧💧). Na druhou stranu se jedná o velmi odolnou rostlinu, kterou netrápí běžní škůdci ani choroby, takže se obejdete bez chemické ochrany.
Co se týče údržby, zběhovec je nenáročný společník vhodný i pro úplné začátečníky. Po odkvětu modrofialových květenství (obvykle v červnu) můžete suché stvoly odstranit, čímž podpoříte tvorbu nových listů a udržíte porost úhledný, nicméně není to nezbytné pro zdraví rostliny. Mrazuvzdornost je vynikající, rostlina snese teploty až do -34 °C (zóna 4a), takže nepotřebuje žádnou zimní ochranu. Pokud byste chtěli pěstovat 'Catlin's Giant' v nádobě či truhlíku, je to možné. Zvolte nádobu s odtokovým otvorem a umístěte ji do stínu. V květináči je však nutné hlídat zálivku mnohem pečlivěji než na záhoně, protože substrát rychleji vysychá.

Původně jde o hájovou rostlinu, která se v přírodě vyskytuje ve vlhkých lesích a na loukách napříč Evropou, což z ní činí mimořádně odolnou a přizpůsobivou trvalku. Její hlavní předností je schopnost rychle se rozrůstat pomocí plazivých výběžků a potlačit tak růst plevele, aniž by byla agresivní vůči větším rostlinám. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.

Hellebores are evergreen perennials that form slowly spreading clumps of leathery, dark green leaves. The stems usually bear four to five flowers. Earlier, they tend to wilt and the stems cannot hold the flower in an upright position. All parts of the plant are poisonous. Double Ellen White is an almost pure white, double-flowered hellebore.
