If you are looking for an indestructible perennial for the shady corners of your garden, purple gromwell is the right choice. In the wild, it is found in warm-loving oak forests and on forest edges, often on limestone substrates, where it bravely resists both drought and shade. Its dark green, lanceolate leaves stay fresh for a long time and form a dense cover that easily spreads laterally thanks to creeping rhizomes. This very trait makes it an expert at filling empty and problematic places under trees or shrubs, where other flowers often struggle to survive.
In the spring months, the entire green carpet lights up with tiny flowers that transition from purple to deep royal blue—a color that is among the rarest in the plant kingdom. Although it is not suitable for cutting or drying, its value lies in reviving the darker corners of the garden and supporting natural biodiversity. Garden phlox, often called simply phlox, is a perennial that we immediately associate with country gardens and summer relaxation. It originally comes from the more humid regions of North America, but it naturalized in European gardens back in the nineteenth century, and an endless array of cultivars has been created since then. Phloxes are prized not only for their flood of flowers in the summer but also for their subtle spicy fragrance that wafts through the garden, especially in the early evening. It is a plant that literally magnetizes bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators, bringing a lot of life into the flower bed. In a garden composition, it perfectly complements taller perennials, covering the lower parts of their stems.
This specific cultivar from the 'Sweet Summer' series stands out, as the name suggests, with a lower and compact growth of around fifty to sixty centimeters. Ačkoliv rostlina toleruje široké spektrum půd, nejlépe bude prospívat v zemině, která je humózní, propustná a hlinitá. Kamejka má ráda vápencové podklady, takže se nemusíte bát ani zásaditější reakce půdy. Půda by měla být dobře odvodněná, protože rostlina nesnáší trvalé zamokření, které by mohlo vést k zahnívání kořenů.
Sazenice vysazujte v rozestupech přibližně 30 až 40 cm od sebe, což odpovídá zhruba 9 až 12 rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Tento spon zajistí, že se rostliny díky svým plazivým oddenkům časem spojí a vytvoří hustý, neprostupný koberec, který efektivně potlačuje růst plevelů. Po výsadbě je nutné rostliny důkladně zalít, aby se kořenový bal dobře spojil s okolní zeminou. Pokud jde o péči během sezóny, kamejka je velmi nenáročná a často se o ní mluví jako o bezúdržbové trvalce. Na jaře vás potěší záplavou modrofialových květů, po jejichž odkvětu můžete trsy mírně sestřihnout, aby rostlina zůstala kompaktní a zbytečně se nevysilovala tvorbou semen, i když to není nezbytně nutné. Velkou výhodou je, že tato rostlina netrpí na žádné běžné choroby ani škůdce, takže se obejdete bez jakékoliv chemické ochrany. Hnojení není obvykle potřeba, stačí jí živiny z přirozeného rozkladu listí, které na ni na podzim spadne, případně můžete na jaře přidat trochu vyzrálého kompostu.
Z hlediska mrazuvzdornosti je kamejka naprostým šampionem, zvládá teploty až do -29 °C (zóna 5a), takže nepotřebuje žádnou speciální zimní ochranu. Co se týče pěstování v nádobách, je to možné, ale vzhledem k její rozpínavé povaze a kořenovému systému to má svá specifika. Pokud se rozhodnete pro pěstování v truhlíku či květináči, zvolte dostatečně velkou a hlubokou nádobu s kvalitní drenáží na dně. V nádobě bude rostlina vyžadovat častější zálivku než ve volné půdě, protože substrát rychleji vysychá, a v zimě byste měli nádobu izolovat, aby kořeny nepromrzly.
