Cultivation
Growing this mountain cornflower is a joy even for complete beginners, as it requires minimal attention. Amethyst Dream loves sunny spots but will grow without issues in partial shade, where its dark purple color will appear very rich. The soil should be permeable and preferably loamy. Because it arrives as a ready-to-plant seedling, there is no need for complex pre-cultivation. Simply dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball, insert the plant, cover with soil, and water thoroughly. If you are planning a mass planting, space the plants about 40 cm apart so they do not crowd each other later on.
During the season, the plant requires regular watering, especially on hot summer days. However, it is not demanding in terms of nutrients, and in over-fertilized soil, it might lose its firm shape. The key maintenance task is removing spent flower stems. If you want to keep the plant vigorous and tidy, trim it back after the main blooming period in July. This prevents seed formation, saves the plant from exhaustion, and encourages it to form a fresh cluster of leaves that will decorate the flowerbed until autumn. A bonus is that this species does not suffer from pests or diseases and is very attractive to bees and other pollinators.
As for winter, you have no need to worry. This perennial is extremely frost-hardy (zone 3a) and does not require covering with evergreen branches or any other protection. Growing in containers is possible and the plant looks very elegant in them, but choose pots with sufficient volume and drainage holes to prevent waterlogged roots. In a container, it is necessary to monitor soil moisture more carefully than in a flowerbed. You can confidently cut the flowers for a vase, where they will remain fresh for about a week, or use them in the kitchen as an edible decoration for dishes.
