Its original wild ancestors come from North America, where they grow in sunny and open spaces. This modern garden cultivar has retained the indomitable hardiness of its ancestors, but unlike them, it is not invasive and does not spread uncontrollably around the garden. It thrives excellently in full sun in well-drained loamy soil, and even complete beginners will easily manage its care. It does not suffer from any diseases or pests and handles even severe frosts without difficulty. It forms sturdy, upright stems up to one meter tall, which do perfectly well without any support.
