Catmints are ideal companions for roses, suitable for naturalistic gardens, and lower species also for boxes and pots. Some of them are an irresistible attraction for cats, caused by the hallucinogen nepetalactone. This should be present in the highest amount in the species Nepeta cataria. Conversely, lemon-scented catmints reportedly do not attract cats. The botanical name Nepeta likely comes from the name of the ancient Etruscan city Nepet - Nepi in the territory of today's Italian province of Viterbo, where the plant was once cultivated. Cultivation
Tato dlouhověká trvalka miluje vlhkost, proto jí vyberte místo na slunci nebo v polostínu, kde se přirozeně drží voda. Bude nadšená z blízkosti zahradního jezírka nebo z vlhčích okrajů záhonů. Půda by měla být ideálně hlinitá, humózní nebo těžší jílovitá s vyšším podílem dusíku. Protože rostlina tvoří hustý, dvacet až třicet centimetrů vysoký koberec, sázejte jednotlivé rostliny na vzdálenost 30 až 40 centimetrů od sebe. Na jeden metr čtvereční tak využijete 7 až 9 sazenic, které brzy plochu souvisle pokryjí.
Zálivka je u této rostliny naprosto klíčová. Vyžaduje totiž vlhké až bažinaté místo s půdou bohatou na živiny. Pokud máte na zahradě sušší podmínky, budete muset pravidelně a vydatně zalévat, zejména během horkých letních měsíců. Zemina by zkrátka nikdy neměla zcela přeschnout. Pomoci si můžete vyšší vrstvou mulče, která udrží vláhu u kořenů po delší dobu. Co se týče hnojení, rdesno ocení na jaře přídavek uleželého kompostu nebo běžného hnojiva pro trvalky, což podpoří tvorbu tmavě zelených listů a následně i bohaté kvetení.
Péče během sezóny je nenáročná, takže ji bez obav zvládne i úplný začátečník. Obrovskou výhodou je, že rdesno vůbec netrpí na škůdce ani na běžné houbové choroby, takže se vyhnete jakýmkoliv chemickým postřikům. Světle růžové květy zdobí rostlinu od července do října. Po prvním odkvětu se doporučuje provést takzvaný zpětný řez, tedy zastřihnutí odkvetlých stonků. Tímto krokem rostlinu oživíte a podpoříte druhou vlnu kvetení na začátku podzimu, kdy se navíc listy začínají barvit do atraktivních bronzových odstínů. Květy navíc můžete nastříhat a využít do svěžích letních kytic, k sušení se ale nehodí. Na jaře pak stačí pouze odstranit staré a odumřelé listy, abyste uvolnili místo novým výhonům a zajistili dobré provzdušnění.
Nemusíte mít strach ani ze zimních měsíců. Rdesno Superba je extrémně mrazuvzdorná trvalka, která bez potíží snese i velmi silné mrazy klesající k neuvěřitelným -34 °C. Na záhoně tak nevyžaduje vůbec žádnou zimní ochranu. Zákazníci se nás také často ptají na pěstování v nádobách. Rdesno můžete úspěšně pěstovat i v prostorném truhlíku nebo květináči na polostinné terase. Základem úspěchu je však neustále vlhký substrát. Doporučujeme proto zvolit samozavlažovací nádoby nebo pod květináč umístit hlubokou misku s vodou. Do nádoby použijte výživnou humózní zeminu a nezapomeňte rostlinu během léta pravidelně přihnojovat.

The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts.
