Šalvěj lékařská je naprosto nenáročná trvalka, kterou bez obav zvládnou i zahradníci začátečníci. Jelikož vám domů dorazí již krásně vzrostlá sazenice v květináči, ušetříte si starosti s výsevem a můžete se rovnou pustit do výsadby. Nejlépe se jí bude dařit na horkém a slunném místě, které napodobuje její původní domovinu v jižní Evropě. Zásadní je výběr správné půdy, šalvěje výborně rostou v propustné, suché a spíše chudé zemině. Velmi dobře jim dělají písčité a štěrkovité půdy, kde se nedrží přebytečná voda. Při sázení do záhonu dodržujte spon kolem čtyřiceti centimetrů, což odpovídá zhruba sedmi rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Tento rozestup zajistí kolem rostlin dobrou cirkulaci vzduchu. Na zálivku je šalvěj velmi nenáročná, stačí jí jen mírná vlhkost, a jakmile zakoření, výborně zvládá i delší sucho. Hnojení není vůbec nutné, v příliš výživné půdě rostlina ztrácí svůj kompaktní tvar i intenzitu vůně. Péče během sezóny a zimování: Během léta nevyžaduje šalvěj žádnou speciální péči a potěší vás tím, že zcela netrpí na choroby a vyhýbají se jí i všichni škůdci. Pokud ji pěstujete především pro kulinářské využití a chcete dosáhnout maximálního obsahu vonných látek v listech, doporučujeme pravidelně odstraňovat drobné fialové a modré květy. Jestliže ale květy ponecháte, promění se v úžasném období června a července v obrovské lákadlo pro včely a další užitečné opylovače. Na jaře je vhodné provést zpětný řez, kterým odstraníte staré a dřevnaté výhony. Tím výrazně podpoříte vitalitu sazenice a udržíte její úhledný, čtyřicet až šedesát centimetrů vysoký trs. Šalvěj je vysoce mrazuvzdorná a na záhonu bez potíží snese mrazy až do minus třiadvaceti stupňů. Jediné, co jí v zimních měsících opravdu vadí, je přílišné vlhko u kořenů, proto je propustná zemina tak důležitá. Pěstování v nádobách: Tuto bylinku můžete velmi snadno pěstovat i v nádobách a truhlících na balkoně nebo terase. Při pěstování v květináči nezapomeňte na dno umístit dostatečně velkou drenážní vrstvu ze štěrku nebo keramzitu a použít zeminu vylehčenou pískem. V nádobě bude rostlina potřebovat o něco častější, ale stále velmi opatrnou zálivku, aby substrát mezi zaléváním stihl důkladně proschnout.
