Šalvěj lékařská k vám dorazí jako krásně prokořeněná sazenice v květináči, kterou můžete ihned po rozbalení přesadit na finální stanoviště. Nejlépe se jí bude dařit na horkém slunném místě, které napodobuje její domovinu ve Středomoří. Půdu vyžaduje velmi dobře propustnou, klidně chudší, písčitou nebo kamenitou. Pokud máte na zahradě těžkou půdu, určitě přidejte na dno výsadbové jamky štěrk pro zajištění dobré drenáže. Při výsadbě do záhonu dodržujte spon zhruba 40 centimetrů, což odpovídá zhruba sedmi rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Tento rozestup zajistí dostatečnou cirkulaci vzduchu kolem úhledných, 40 až 60 centimetrů vysokých keříků.

Co se týče zálivky a výživy, je odrůda Purple Beauty naprosto nenáročná a ideální pro začátečníky. Rostlina je suchomilná, takže si vystačí jen s občasným zalitím během velmi suchých období. Hnojení není vůbec nutné, v chudé půdě si zachovává mnohem lepší a kompaktnější tvar. Šalvěje dobře rostou na plném slunci a hodí se dobře pro pěstování v nádobách na terase či balkonu. Pokud ji budete pěstovat v květináči, nezapomeňte na dostatečně velkou nádobu s odtokovým otvorem a silnou vrstvou drenáže na dně, aby kořeny nestály ve vodě.

Během sezóny vás šalvěj odmění nádhernými šedozelenými listy s purpurovým nádechem a v červnu a červenci i modrofialovými květy, které magicky přitahují včely a motýly. Jelikož je rostlina zcela bez škůdců a netrpí na žádné choroby, nemusíte řešit chemické postřiky. Pro udržení kompaktního tvaru a pro maximální obsah vonných látek v listech se doporučuje po odkvětu rostlinu lehce zastřihnout. Zpětný řez provádějte vždy až brzy na jaře, čímž podpoříte hustotu keříku a odstraníte případné omrzlé konce větviček.

Tato bylinka a okrasná trvalka v jednom je vysoce mrazuvzdorná a bez problémů zvládne teploty až do -23 °C. Vadit jí může pouze přílišné zimní vlhko a těžká mokrá půda. Před příchodem silných mrazů můžete kořeny rostliny lehce přikrýt chvojím, ale u starších dobře zakořeněných keříků to nebývá nutné. Listy i stonky s květy pak po celou sezónu můžete průběžně sklízet, skvěle se hodí k řezu do letních kytic nebo k sušení.
