Ostřice muskingumská je spolehlivá trvalka, která do zahrady vnese svěží zelenou barvu a zajímavou strukturu. Její původní domovinou jsou vlhké lužní lesy a břehy vodních toků v Severní Americe. Právě proto si na zahradě nejlépe poradí na místech, kde je dostatek vláhy. Výborně se jí daří v humózní, hlinité až jílovité půdě, a to na plném slunci i v polostínu..
V záhonu zaujme především svým specifickým růstem, kdy se světle zelené listy skládají na stoncích do tvaru připomínajícího drobné palmy. Dorůstá výšky šedesát až osmdesát centimetrů a od června do srpna tvoří nenápadné, ale elegantní květy v kaštanově hnědém odstínu. Ideálně vynikne ve skupinových výsadbách poblíž jezírek, v dešťových zahradách nebo jako podrost.

Ostřice muskingumská je nenáročná a spolehlivá trvalka, kterou od nás obdržíte jako zdravou a dobře prokořeněnou sazenici připravenou k výsadbě. Aby se jí u vás dařilo, je klíčové vybrat správné stanoviště. Nejlépe poroste na plném slunci nebo v polostínu. Miluje vlhko, proto je ideální volbou k okrajům jezírek, do dešťových zahrad nebo na místa, kde se přirozeně drží voda. Půda by měla být ideálně hlinitá, humózní až jílovitá a schopná dobře zadržovat vláhu. Pro správnou výsadbu dodržte tyto základní parametry:
- Vysazujte na vzdálenost 35 až 45 centimetrů.
- Na jeden metr čtvereční umístěte 5 až 7 sazenic. Tento spon zajistí, že rostliny po zapojení vytvoří hustý a na pohled atraktivní porost.
Po výsadbě je nejdůležitější péčí vydatná zálivka. Tato ostřice patří mezi rostliny s vysokými nároky na vodu, proto dbejte na to, aby substrát v jejím okolí nikdy zcela nevyschl. Během horkých letních měsíců bude vyžadovat pravidelné a štědré zalévání. Co se týče výživy, na jaře jí prospěje přidání kvalitního kompostu k bázi rostliny, složitější přihnojování není nutné. Skvělou zprávou pro každého pěstitele je, že tato trvalka je zcela odolná vůči běžným škůdcům i chorobám, takže se vyhnete nutnosti používat jakékoliv chemické postřiky a rostlina zůstane vitální bez větší námahy.
Během sezóny vás od června do srpna potěší nenápadnými, ale elegantními květy v kaštanově hnědém odstínu, které dorůstají výšky 60 až 80 centimetrů a můžete je využít i k řezu do vázy. S úderem zimy nadzemní část rostliny zasychá. Protože ostřice muskingumská nemá výrazný zimní efekt, doporučujeme na začátku jara, ještě před rašením nových listů, odumřelé trsy seříznout těsně nad zemí. Tím podpoříte zdravý a vitální růst nových, sytě zelených listů uspořádaných do tvaru malých palem. Rostlina je extrémně mrazuvzdorná až do -34 °C, takže v záhonu nepotřebuje žádnou speciální zimní ochranu.
Často se ptáte, zda je možné pěstovat tuto ostřici i v nádobách nebo truhlících na terase. Odpověď zní ano, ale má to svá specifika. Při pěstování v květináči musíte být obzvlášť pečliví se zálivkou. Zvolte nádobu bez drenážních otvorů nebo pod ni umístěte hlubokou misku, ve které bude trvale stát voda. Zabráníte tak rychlému vysychání, které by rostlinu v letních dnech mohlo rychle oslabit. I v nádobě bez problémů přezimuje, jen dbejte na to, aby substrát během holomrazů nebyl úplně na prach suchý. Vypadá skvěle jako solitér i v kombinaci s dalšími vlhkomilnými druhy.
