The reliable and very popular 'Cornel Brons' variety will richly reward you with its perfect terracotta flowers if you give it enough sun and nutritious humus-rich soil in the garden. Plant the tubers themselves in a prepared bed in May or June, as soon as the last spring frosts have passed for sure. Place them about 10 to 15 cm deep, ideally horizontally with the eye facing up, and maintain the necessary spacing of 30–50 cm. If you want guaranteed first cut bouquets at the very beginning of summer, we highly recommend pre-cultivating the tubers in containers inside the house. You can then transplant the plants outside after the 'frost men' as very strong and hardy individuals with a perfectly developed root system.
To achieve the absolute maximum number of flowers, a key step is proper pinching. By simply removing the main terminal shoot on a young plant, you will ensure that the bush branches out beautifully and richly in all directions. Since the straight and sturdy stems of this variety reach a height of 80 to 160 cm, it is absolutely essential to provide them with timely support to prevent them from breaking. Water the plant moderately and initially give it a quality nitrogen fertilizer for rapid development of green mass. As soon as you see the first buds forming, switch immediately to a fertilizer with a high potassium content. This will guarantee the overall strength of the stems and the breathtakingly rich brick color of all the flowers.
For this orange beauty, the simple rule that the more you cut it, the more flowers it produces applies 100%. Therefore, cut them exclusively when they are already three-quarters in bloom and their very back petals feel firm and fresh to the touch. Once cut, Dahlias will not open much further in the vase. It is crucial to soak the ends of the stems for a full 15 minutes in hot water (70–80 °C) immediately after harvesting. This thermal shock reliably extends the life of the bouquet to about one week. On the outdoor bed, never leave old flowers to dry out and rather remove them regularly and carefully.
Unfortunately, Dahlia tubers are not frost-hardy in our conditions and would not survive the outdoor winter. As soon as autumn frost completely burns the green leaves, cut the stems low, carefully dig up the tubers with a spade, and store them safely in a frost-free area, preferably buried in sand. Throughout the season, keep an eye out for hungry slugs and snails—which can be managed by timely collection—as well as unwanted thrips or the dangerous mosaic virus. If you would like to propagate these beautiful plants yourself in the future, by far the best method is dividing the tubers of older and larger clumps just before spring planting, or rooting sprouted spring shoots in the form of cuttings.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
