Origanum hybrida

Ornamental Oregano Dingle Fairy

Perennial ornamental oregano 'Dingle Fairy' is a tiny garden treasure that combines beauty, utility, and enormous hardiness. Its wild ancestors come from the rocky and sun-drenched corners of southern Europe, so this herb is naturally used to modest conditions. In the garden, it will appreciate a spot in direct sun with well-drained and rather poorer soil, where it will thrive best. After planting the seedling in its permanent location, you can look forward to a tough plant that even a complete beginner can easily handle. It joyfully withstands severe frosts, avoids pests and diseases, and makes do with a minimum of moisture. From July to August, it blooms with tiny pink flowers that literally come alive thanks to the constant visits of bees and butterflies. The 'Dingle Fairy' cultivar forms neat green mounds with a wonderful scent, which are perfectly suited for steppe plantings, dry walls, or in the front lines of mixed flower beds. Because it is a strongly aromatic and fully edible plant, it will also serve as a great spice in your kitchen. You can also cut the flowering stems for a vase, where they will last for about a week in water and add an informal cottage charm to any bouquet, or simply dry them to create fragrant winter decorations. Show full description

The whole plant is also strongly aromatic, fully edible, and its spicy scent irresistibly attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. In the garden, this undemanding plant will find use mainly in rockeries, on dry walls, or on the edges of mixed steppe beds, where it beautifully complements lower drought-tolerant grasses. Cultivation

Growing 'Dingle Fairy' ornamental oregano is incredibly easy and can easily be handled even by a complete beginner. Due to its Mediterranean origin, the key to success is choosing the right location. Plant the seedling in full and hot sun, where it will thrive best. The soil should be rather poor, drier, and above all, excellently draining, so it does not retain excess water at the roots. Stony, gravelly, or loamy soils with good drainage are ideal. Plan the planting of the seedling in the garden ideally for spring, when the danger of late frosts has passed. When planting, keep a spacing of 30 cm, which corresponds to roughly twelve plants per square metre. This distance will ensure sufficient air circulation and support the healthy growth of compact mounds.

Once the seedling is well-rooted, it becomes a very tough perennial that gets by with a minimum of moisture. It requires watering only during a long-lasting drought; otherwise, it easily handles regular rainfall on its own. Fertilizing is not necessary at all; on the contrary, overly nutritious soil could cause the stems to stretch and lose their nice shape. A huge advantage of this cultivar is its absolute resistance – the plant is free of diseases and pests, so you don't have to worry about any chemical sprays. Moreover, from July to August, it will delight you with a flood of pink flowers, which will guaranteed attract bees and butterflies to the garden.

During the season, this ornamental oregano requires no special care. To maintain a nice and dense shape, we recommend performing a hard pruning early in the spring, during which you remove the old and dry shoots close to the ground. The plant will subsequently sprout fresh, wonderfully smelling green leaves to a height of 20 to 30 cm. No complicated protection is necessary before winter; 'Dingle Fairy' is fully frost-resistant down to -23 °C. Customers often ask about the possibility of growing this herb in a container. The answer here is clear – yes, you can successfully grow it in a spacious container or window box on a sunny balcony. In this case, do not forget to place a strong drainage layer of gravel at the bottom of the pot and use a permeable substrate mixed with sand, so the roots do not rot in the winter period.

The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
