Amsonia illustris is a fascinating long-lived perennial that will surprise you with several transformations throughout the year. Its original home is in the eastern regions of the United States, where it naturally grows in moister grassy habitats. Thanks to this, it is extremely adaptable and in our gardens it will appreciate humous and loamy soil, whether in full sun or partial shade. In a sunny spot, expect its delicate flowers to fade slightly faster. You will receive a well-rooted seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant directly to the selected spot in the flowerbed, ideally at a spacing of about fifty to sixty centimeters. It doesn't need support, easily withstands frosts down to minus twenty-eight degrees, and common diseases and pests avoid it, so even complete beginners can handle growing it. At the turn of May and June, it forms tufts of fresh green leaves that resemble a willow. It grows up to eighty centimeters tall and is soon adorned with star-shaped flowers in sky and light blue shades. These flowers not only look beautiful, but reliably attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators from the wide surroundings. Gardeners love it for its variability. Early in the spring, it captivates with dark emerging shoots, and in the autumn its leaves turn beautiful mustard yellow tones, bringing a warm autumn atmosphere to the garden. It fits perfectly into mixed perennial beds, where it will complement ornamental grasses well. Since the entire plant is poisonous, it is good to handle it carefully. If you like creating your own bouquets, you will also love amsonia for floral use, although it is not suitable for drying. Its blue flowers will add softness and elegance to any vase. When cut, however, the stems exude a white milky sap. To make it last as long as possible in a vase, it is necessary to sear the ends of the stems with a flame after cutting and only then immediately place them in water. Thanks to this little trick, you can enjoy the fresh flowers for up to ten days.

The original species often grows near streams and in moister meadows, so it will easily settle in our gardens in sun or partial shade, where well-drained, loamy, and slightly humous soil will suit it best. You will receive a rooted seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant into the flowerbed. Avens forms nice basal clumps of green leaves, which over time function as an excellent ground cover. Its growth is reliable and its care is downright undemanding, because the plant is not bothered by pests or diseases and withstands frosts down to minus twenty-eight degrees. It stands out best when you plant it in smaller groups about thirty centimeters apart. From May to July, richly branched stems bearing semi-double flowers with gently ruffled petals appear above the foliage. The Mai Tai cultivar, which was bred in the USA in 2005, is characterized by its amazing color variability. It blooms in peach tones with a pink tint and gradually transitions into more muted pastel, salmon, and apricot shades. Blooming avens is a huge attraction for insects, especially for butterflies. We cut the stems for a vase when roughly a quarter to half of the flowers on the stem are open. They will stay beautiful in water for approximately seven days and add lightness and movement to an arrangement. However, its flowers are not suitable for drying. Po výsadbě je klíčová pravidelná zálivka. Nějaký čas jí trvá, než se v zahradě usadí a zesílí, pak je velmi odolná a snese i kratší období sucha. Během sezóny nepotřebuje žádnou složitou péči ani oporu, protože její stonky jsou přirozeně pevné a dorůstají do výšky 60 až 80 centimetrů. Zjara můžete rostlinu podpořit přidáním kvalitního kompostu k jejím kořenům, což jí dodá potřebné živiny pro bohatou násadu květů na přelomu května a června. S odstraňováním odkvetlých květů si nemusíte lámat hlavu, rostlina se sama nepřesévá a je krásná i po odkvětu.
Velkou výhodou této trvalky je její naprostá nenáročnost a mimořádná odolnost. Nemá potíže se škůdci ani nemocemi, takže se s klidným svědomím vyhnete jakýmkoliv postřikům. Navíc je extrémně mrazuvzdorná a bez problému zvládne teploty klesající až k minus osmadvaceti stupňům. Na podzim se její zelené listy zbarví do hořčicově žluté a na zimu přirozeně odumřou. Nadzemní část doporučujeme seříznout až v předjaří, těsně předtím, než začnou rašit nové výhony. Při jakékoliv manipulaci nebo řezu však buďte maximálně opatrní a používejte rukavice. Celá rostlina je jedovatá a při poranění roní bílé mléko.
Často se ptáte, zda je možné amsónii pěstovat také v nádobách nebo prostorných truhlících. Tato možnost tu určitě je, ale vyžaduje o něco více vaší pozornosti. Vyberte dostatečně velký a hluboký květináč s odtokovými otvory, aby kořeny nikdy nestály ve vodě. Použijte kvalitní substrát smíchaný s kompostem, který zajistí vhodné humózní a hlinité prostředí. V nádobě bude rostlina vyžadovat mnohem častější zálivku než ve volné půdě, protože substrát logicky rychleji vysychá. Před příchodem silných mrazů je dobré květináč obalit jutou nebo polystyrenem, abyste ochránili kořenový bal před úplným promrznutím.
